Biography

Jose Atanacio Caballes Sr. was a modest man, quiet and observant in his ways. He was trustworthy and traditional in his approach to his life and in his relationships. He was tough-minded with the kind of “stick to it” attitude that earned the respect of all who knew him. He was also a man who was meticulous, carefully disciplined, and orderly in virtually everything he undertook. Realistic about life, he was always at the ready, prepared to take on responsibility.

Jose was born on June 16, 1928 in Laguna, Philippines to Fidel Caballes and Teodora Atanacio Caballes. Jose was raised in Laguna with his sisters, Luisa, Leonora, and Lolita; and his brothers, Nicanor, and Rolando. As a young child, Jose was never someone who needed to be the center of attention. He loved to spend time playing with his siblings and playing basketball when he got the chance. As he grew older, Jose truly came into his own with a sense of responsibility and duty. During World War II, Jose was a guerilla, sparking what would become a lifelong commitment to the military.

If there is one thing people will always remember about Jose, it was his goal-oriented mindset. Whenever he set out to do something, he worked hard to accomplish his goals. After graduating from Rizal Standard Academy in 1944, Jose began his 30-year career as a Military Policeman in the Armed Forces of the Philippines until his retirement in 1978.

On December 16, 1954 Jose exchanged wedding vows with Rosabelle Fox in Lucena City, Philippines. Jose held traditional values about marriage and family life, and took to fatherhood well. Jose was blessed with two sons, Angelito and Jose Jr.; and two daughters, Myrna and Teodora. He was a good father to them, always firm yet fair in the way he raised them. He was later blessed with 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His family was rounded out by his Dachshund/Yorkie "Dorkie" mix, Sherman, who was his buddy for 6 years.

Always considered to be a solid friend, Jose was fortunate to have numerous acquaintances and several very close friends during his life. It was not uncommon for Jose to go beyond the call of duty for others, and friends frequently sought him out for advice. While growing up, his best friend was Dencio Padilla. Later in life, he became friends with Nita and Tony.

Whenever he wasn’t working, Jose enjoyed various hobbies. He loved to spend his time gardening and cooking for his family. After his retirement in 1978, he moved back to Laguna before relocating to the United States. During this time, Jose loved spending time with his family and loved ones, especially during celebrations. He was also something of a sports fan, and would watch basketball and boxing whenever he got the chance. Jose was a man who was dedicated and devoted to his faith. He was a devote Catholic and was a member of St. Anthony De Padua for 20+ years in the Philippines.

He was committed to the traditional values that he upheld his entire life. He committed himself to being a hard worker who expected the same effort in return from those around him. Most of all, he was committed to those he knew and loved, and he will be deeply missed.
