It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Josephine "Jo" Ashley who quietly passed away at home on the afternoon of October 30, 2023 with her family present.
Jo had been a resident in Las Vegas since 1956 where she began to work and raise her three children.
When Jo began to work, her first job was as a change girl at the Stardust Hotel and Casino. After working at the Stardust, she went to work for Clark County and the City of Las Vegas, first at the Clark County Sheriff's Department now known as the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. At the Sheriff's department, Jo worked in the Crime Lab processing crime scene evidence. After leaving the Sheriff’s department, she went to work for the Las Vegas Fire Department where she retired as a Dispatcher.
After retirement and after the MGM fire in 1980, she was asked by officials to go to Reno for training on the Fire Suppression System and came back to train those who were installing and implementing the system.
Jo's passion was ice skating ballet and Karaoke. She spent many hours at the Las Vegas Ice Center where she had created the "coffee club". She assisted in training some of the young and older skaters and assisted in several competitions throughout the year.
Jo was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years Donald "Bigun" Ashley, who had also retired from the Clark County Fire Department.
Her three children survive Jo: daughter Karen Sanchez of Las Vegas; son Daniel "Abby" Sanchez and his partner Claudia of Las Vegas; and daughter Diane Poff and her husband Roy of Las Vegas. In addition to her three children Jo is survived by her grandchildren Tania Handleman, her husband Darren and great-granddaughters Brittney, Ashleigh and Jasmine all from Spokane Valley, Washington; Brandi of California; Samantha Salcedo of Chester, Virginia; Christopher Poff, his wife Sarai and great-granddaughter Jaide and great-grandson Bryce all from Las Vegas; and Kenneth Perry from Spokane Valley, Washington, great-grandson Mason and great-granddaughter Juleah of Las Vegas;
