Larry Dean Rempp of Las Vegas, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2024, at the age of 86. After several months of declining health, he died peacefully with his loving children and grandchildren by his side.
Larry was born on June 30, 1938, in Yankton, South Dakota to Frank and Julia Rempp, who have proceeded him in death. Larry was one of 12 children raised by Julia after his father passed away. He had many adventures growing up in South Dakota, he lived on a farm with his mother, brothers and sisters and took many responsibilities as a young man to take care of the farm and his family. He was responsible for taking care of all the animals but always spoke fondly of milking cows and giving stray cats a sip of milk from time to time. He was an avid baseball player growing up and loved the sport until his final days. Additionally, Larry enjoyed watching the Kentucky Derby and fawned over the beautiful horses and sportsmanship of the jockeys.
As a young adult, Larry made the decision to move from South Dakota to Southern California to escape the cold weather and hunt for better job opportunities. Shortly after his relocation, Larry began his journey into retail that led him to Smith’s Food King. He started at the bottom and learned all he could about the grocery store industry. During his time in California, he had a promotional opportunity that led him to Las Vegas. At the time of his retirement, due to his many innovative ideas, he worked his way up to the Director of Produce for the entire Western region of the US. He made many lifelong friends during his time working at the company and always spoke fondly of his work colleagues and his time working at Smith’s, so much so, that both of his children followed his stead and worked for Smith’s for many years.
Larry was a determined man and could be stubborn at times, but this was part of his charm. He was a hard worker and always did everything he could to ensure the care of his family. He had a great sense of humor and always found a way to take an awkward or tense situation and turn it jovial with his quick wit. In his later years, Larry had time after retirement, so he learned everything he could about sports, point spreads, overs and unders, and had no problem teaching anyone who wanted to learn. He turned this hobby into an after-retirement career of sports betting. Larry was so invested in sports that he usually had two televisions to watch different games and horse races at the same time.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, eight of his siblings, and the mother of his children. Left to cherish his memory are his two brothers, Robert (Sharon), and Ronald (Bette); his sister, Wilma (James); two children, Sherry and Steven (Joanne), five granddaughters, two great grandsons, with one great grandson on the way (who will be Larry’s namesake), and a multitude of extended family and friends.
Larry’s celebration of life is scheduled for December 20, 2024, at Palm Eastern Mortuary located at 7600 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas NV, 89123. The viewing is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. with funeral services beginning at 1:00 p.m. After the services, Sherry and Steven, along with Larry’s grandchildren will receive extended family and friends for a small reception with food and drink provided. Larry’s family would like to thank everyone who assisted and called with support and love.
