

Marie Manendo, 82, a long-time resident of the Las Vegas area, passed away on January 5, 2015. She was born on December 23, 1932, in Erie, Pennsylvania, to Emil and Stella Balos. She was married to Michael Manendo, also of Erie. Marie was active in the Las Vegas community, serving as trustee of the Paradise Democratic Club, as well as on the boards of the Nevada Association of Manufactured Home Owners and a Las Vegas Chapter of AARP. She was an active member of the Democratic Party, Seniors United and the Nevada Senior Coalition. She was also a long-time advocate for Stop DUI. Most notably, Marie was known for her work as campaign manager for her son's successful political campaigns for the Nevada State Legislature. In Erie, Marie was active in Girl Scouting and served as PTA president of Lakewood Elementary, Westlake Middle and McDowell High Schools. She ran for the school board, was a small business owner and a beautician. She was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Balos of Erie. Marie is survived by her daughter, Christine Turner; her son, Nevada State Senator Mark Manendo; grandsons, Logan and Perry Turner; brothers, William Balos of Erie, and Gerald Balos; as well as many cherished friends. A visitation will be held from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. on Monday, January 12, with a memorial service following, both at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. The family will hold a private burial at Southern Nevada Veterans Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive in Boulder City.
