He was born in Italy in 1927, the second of four children. He grew up in Anaconda Montana.
He graduated from Anaconda High School in 1946, and then enlisted in the Navy for two years. He received his B.A. and master’s degree from the University of Portland. He taught and coached at Mt. Angel, Oregon for 3 years. He spent 2 years teaching in Anaconda Jr. High School and Anaconda High School.
He married Jo Anne Rodgers in St. Lawrence O’Toole Catholic Church in Butte on August 10, 1957. The couple moved to Las Vegas in 1958 where they raised four children and resided until 2001, when they moved to Henderson Nevada.
Mario retired after 30 years of service as a teacher and administrator for the Clark County School District.
He was a founding member of the Southern Nevada Pop Warner Football Board and is a member of the National Pop Warner Football Hall of Fame. He is a member of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame. He was a founding member of the National Football Foundation – Bill Ireland/Las Vegas Chapter. He was named Clark County Father of the year in 1985.
In 2001, the Clark County School District opened Mario C. and Jo Anne Monaco Middle School, in recognition of the couple’s service to the district and the community.
He is survived by his four children: Charles (Shirley Ann), Brian (Denise), Jo Ellen (Doug Leach), and Mark; seven grandchildren: Kyle, Rhys, Jennifer, Kathleen, Jason, Bryce, and Cheryl; brother Guy; and numerous nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Mario C. & Joanne Monaco Middle School, 1870 N. Lamont St. Las Vegas, NV 89115 (702-799-3670).
