Martha (Marti) Gannett Apenbrink, age 75, of Las Vegas , Nevada passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2024 after a courageously fought battle with cancer.
Marti was born November 3, 1948 in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late Taylor W. Gannett and Catherine Lynch Gannett. In addition to her parents, Marti was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Edwin (Ed) John Apenbrink. They were married in Falls Church, VA in May of 1973.
She is survived by her sons, John Kerwin Apenbrink of Las Vegas and Christopher Gannett Apenbrink of Boise, ID. Also, sister in law JoAnn A Griffeth, nephew, Andrew W. Griffeth (Lindsay) and beloved great nephew and niece, Sawyer William Griffeth and Sutton Elizabeth Griffeth, all of Athens, GA.
Marti grew up in Falls Church, VA and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1967. She attended Wheeling College and graduated in 1971 from St. Louis University with a B.A. in English.
She and Ed lived in Springfield, IL, where John was born, before Ed's career took them to New York City and Chris was born in Stamford, CT. Her sons were, of course, the lights of her life and she was an incredible mother.
From there, they lived in Atlanta, GA and Cleveland, OH before settling for the last twenty-five years in Las Vegas.
Marti was such a kind and fun person. She easily made friends across the country where they lived and traveled and many more as she worked in healthcare management in Las Vegas for twenty-five years.
Marti had many interests throughout her life including gardening, photography, reading and traveling. She enjoyed music and attending shows and concerts in Las Vegas. Cruises were always a favorite, especially recent ones to Alaska, Tahiti and Germany.
Marti took much pleasure in OLLI classes and activities at UNLV and became friends with many of the other students.
Holidays were always a favorite for her as she enjoyed decorating and preparing special meals for any occasion and entertaining friends particularly during football season. She was an avid sports fan and followed both college and pro football.
Marti and her gentle joyful nature will be sorely missed!
A memorial service for Marti will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 12:00 PM at Palm Southwest Mortuary, 7979 W. Warm Springs Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89113.
