Martin Holland, or "Buzz" as he was affectionately known, passed away in Las Vegas, NV where he had been living for the past several years. At 103 years young, he died of coronary failure. His passing was quick and he was independent until his last breath. Just 8 days prior we had a wonderful family gathering with him, and felt very blessed. Martin Holland was born in Baltimore, MD the son of Edward S. and Barbara Holland. He married our mother, Marjorie Boggs in 1940. They were divorced in 1959, but he remained very connected to his four children. Our father's career began on January 16, 1930, at the age of 15, when he went to work for Berliner-Joyce Aircraft Corporation in Maryland. This was his first and only job. In 1935 with a group of young, inspired engineers, they drove out to Los Angeles from Baltimore and founded North American Aviation. His career spanned the history of aviation and included such historic contributions as the B-25 Mitchell, the F-86 Sabre Jet, the F-100 Super Sabre and later the X-15.
Buzz was always organized, busy and looking towards the next project, whether it be the NAA equestrian group "The Flying Horsemen", or being the Charter President and later National Director of the Society of Photographic Engineers, or teaching war time photographic classes at California Institute of Technology, or his membership as one of the Bald Eagles (the original group who came out from Maryland).
He took many cruises, over the years and loved being out on the dance floor with his companion of many years, Leora Stone. His energy was boundless.
Martin Holland is survived by his children: Karen (Bob) Gerring, Martin (Chris) Holland, Michael Holland, Mary Catherine (Mick) Stratton; his loving grandchildren: Tom Stehly, David (Jamie) Stehly, Amy (Bryan) Santy, Matthew (Sarah) Holland, "Buck" Holland, Tyler Ford; and his beloved great-grandchildren who brought him so much joy: Nathan & Emma Santy, Jaxon Ford, Paige & Carson Holland, June & Paige Stehly, Reid, William, Cassidy Holland.
Our father received many awards, and had many great achievements in his lifetime, but the one that stands out as his true legacy, is having a positive mental attitude. We will carry your memory in our hearts.
