Mary was born in New York City to Nora (Daisy) Bourke Murphy and Timothy Murphy, the eldest of their four children, and their only daughter. Mary was her family's mainstay on the home front during World War II when her three brothers were serving overseas in the U.S. armed forces, and especially after Daisy's sudden death in 1943. Mary married Ed Connell in 1948, and they raised three children: Denis, Brian, and Mary Ann, who survive her, along with daughters-in-law Maureen and Annie; 4 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. She is pre-deceased by her husband Ed and son-in-law Geoff.
Mary was known for her sharp intelligence, quick wit, and forthright opinions. Her fierce love for family knew no bounds. She inherited her father's bright blue eyes and love for Ireland, which she was proud to have visited 3 times. Her family and friends were privileged beyond measure to have loved and known her. Our love for her and our memories of her will always be cherished. May she Rest in Eternal Peace ☦️🙏🏻❤️.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
