Quinn Terry Windes was born on December 2, 2021, at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. Several months prior to her birth, it was discovered that only the right half of her heart had developed, and work was started to help her live with this condition. After she was born, it was discovered that she had several other serious conditions, and the outlook for her was not good. In spite of all these obstacles, the staff at Sunrise Hospital’s Pediatric CICU, her family, and most of all Quinn herself fought with super-human determination for her condition to improve. It was during this time that Quinn earned the nickname, “The Mighty Quinn.” Amazingly, by August of 2022 she was ready to go home.
Contrary to all expectations, Quinn continued to improve at home. Her medical caretakers worked tirelessly and developed bonds with her as if she was a member of their own families. It is fair to say that all who knew Quinn loved her. It was clear from her attitude and her smiles that she enjoyed life, and her demeanor was infectious. Quinn thrived. Despite initial reluctance, her surgeons elected to perform surgery on her to improve her blood circulation, even though they thought the chances of her surviving the surgery were no better than 50/50. Those closest to her knew better, and it was no surprise when she sailed through the surgery. She no longer needed supplemental oxygen, and she was healthier in every way. Her pediatrician started calling her “The Miracle Child.” There was good reason for this. Only a miracle could explain her ability to fight through all the obstacles she encountered.
Quinn loved watching Sesame Street, and especially loved any part that involved Elmo. Despite the fact that she required a tracheotomy and a ventilator, she found a way to sing and dance along with him. She loved rides in her stroller with her family and friends through the neighborhood and to the park, as well as rides in the car. Her grandparents especially enjoyed it when she watched the Houston Astros win the 2022 World Series with them. Quinn loved her “Stuffies,” especially Bunny Friend, Flat Cat, Wormy, and Happy Octopus. If Quinn had a trademark, it was the way she held her left foot high in the air in a way only a gymnast could replicate when she was happy. This was so common; she often slept this way. She earned many nicknames other than “The Mighty Quinn,” including Quinnie Quinn, Miss Q, Quinncess and Quinnie the Pooh.
All appeared to be going well when on the afternoon of October 25, her mighty heart gave out. She passed suddenly and did not suffer.
Quinn is survived by her mother, Allison Windes, father Brant Coleman, grandparents Andy and Tammy Windes and Mara Coleman Carlson, uncle Will Windes (Godfather), great aunts Terry Fields (Godmother) and Christa Gush, great grandparents John and Shirley Eckles and Bob and Gundi Gush, many cousins and a host of others who loved her as if she was family. She will be remembered for her courageous and cheerful fight for life, for making the most of her time here, for making the people around her so happy, and she will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
