Dr. Rachmel Cherner, a nationally renowned Philadelphia Endocrinologist and educator who practiced for almost 60 years, passed away in Las Vegas on November 20, 2022 at the age of 92 surrounded by his family. Rachmel was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 11, 1930 to Maxwell and Freda Cherner (nee Bronsweig).
Rachmel was preceded in death by his parents and the love of his life, Aileen “Ricky” Cherner. He was a healer through his compassionate care of his patients, as well as through his art. His brilliant, uncompromising attention to detail provided unsurpassed patient care. He was also deeply dedicated to the development of the future of Medicine in his role as a Professor of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Medical School. And in his spare time, he created mosaics, wood carvings, stained glass, tile cubes, tapestries, and illuminated biblical texts inspired by the depth of his spiritual inspirations and his lifelong love of life and family. Later in life as he lost his remaining sight, he painted pinecones and created centerpieces to give as gifts. His Great-Grandchildren were part of this effort and will miss going pinecone hunting and bringing GG Pop-Pop their found art supplies.
He is survived by his three daughters, Cindy (Marc) Fox (NV), Wendy (Philip) Maneval (PA), and Maia Stein (PA) who recently lost her husband Adam; along with Grandchildren, Hal Savar, Heather Hunt; Evan Savar; Jeffrey and Mary Maneval; Sarah Maneval; and Benjamin Stein; as well as Great Grandchildren, Violet and Memphis Savar; and Kennedy Savar.
A graveside service for Rachmel will be held Sunday, November 27, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Montefiore Cemetery, 600 Church Road, Jenkintown, PA 19046. The Goldsteins' Rosenberg's Raphael-Sacks Funeral Home are handling the burial arrangements in PA. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.kingdavidlv.com for the Cherner family. King David Memorial Chapel assisted with the arrangements.
Future plans for a celebration of life will be scheduled in Las Vegas in the near future.
