My condolences to the family of Ray  I knew Ray when i was working at the MSC/MARAD firefighting school in Freehold NJ . We became good friends and we were also stationed in Subic Navy Base at the same time . I was able to keep in touch with him when he started TRL in San Diego and talked to him on Face Time from the Philippines one time . He was wonderful man and he will be missed . Thank you for your 30 years of service Ray 

It is with great sadness to learn of Ray's passing. In our early years in the Navy we spent a great deal of time together, between boot camp, "A" school and stationed together on the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43).
I lost track of Ray for several years and our paths crossed again in 1984, shortly before I retired. Neither one of us had intentions of making the Navy a career -planned to get out after 4 years, get an apartment and go to college. Never happened.
 A true friend and shipmate, who will be missed.

Ray and I were stationed together at Navy Nuclear Weapons Supply Annex (NWSA) at Oakland, California. This navy assignment was fondly called the "First Class Rest Home". We all were First Class Petty Officers (E-6) and most had been on deployments during the Vietnam War. We were a close crew and enjoyed our work and the much slower pace versus what we had all been used to during the war. Ray was an outstanding sailor and this is borne out by the fact he earned his commission the "hard way" he earned it! His achievement of the rank of an LDO LCDR is very commendable. The Navy Nuclear Weapons community is a small unique community and most know each other. I saw or spoke to Ray over the period of my Navy career and last saw him during the annual 2017 NNWA reunion in San Diego...he had changed very little over the years and I was overjoyed to see him. As shipmates the ties of respect, friendship and love last all our lives. Sadly a mutual shipmate GMTCM Charlie Cushman passed away just a few days after Ray! My wife and I pray that God will wrap His arms of comfort about all of Ray's family and loved ones. rest in Peace Lieutenant Commander Raymond Roger Gillip. 

I first met Ray while in the Navy at NWSD, NSC Oakland, CA and he was a great mentor to a young second class. We played fast pitch softball for the base as well as basketball during lunch time and had a intermural team too. Also worked with him at NWTGP, San Diego, CA where he was a LDO and a great guy. Last time I seen him was at a Navy Nuclear Weapons Association reunion in San Diego, Ca in 2017. He didn't change over the years, a big smile on his face and the funny laugh. He will be missed. Rest in Peace Ray, you deserve it.
