Richard Carl “Rich” Ritzo, age 76, passed away on Monday, January 26, 2026, after a courageous year-and-a-half battle with cancer. He died in the comfort of his home, surrounded by love and the presence of family.
Born in Trenton, New Jersey, Rich was the youngest of six children born to Chivert and Mary Sanzotta Ritzo.
A true self-starter, Rich pioneered a path beyond his hometown, traveling west to create a life uniquely his own defined by opportunity, independence, and perseverance. A dedicated businessman for more than four decades, he spent over 20 years as a 7-Eleven franchisee and convenience store owner, in addition to owning and managing several independently operated stores. Later in life, Rich expanded into land and real estate investment. Together with his wife, Karen, they pursued numerous real estate ventures, including rental homes in Florida, Michigan, and Arizona. Most notably, they ran two Airbnb vacation homes in Lake Havasu City, where they enjoyed home improvement projects, entertaining friends, and memorable family vacations.
Outside of work, Rich embraced many passions. He was an avid golfer and proud member of the Men’s League at Wildhorse Golf Club, enjoyed riding motorcycles, and was an active member of the Studebaker Club, reflecting his appreciation for craftsmanship and classic style. A 30-year member of the Knights of Columbus, Rich lived his faith through service and fraternity. He also helped establish the first Festival of Trees and Lights, a fundraising event for the Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada. Inspired by his son, he dedicated countless hours to its mission and community.
Rich loved music and singing, especially sharing laughter-filled karaoke sessions with his children and grandchildren. After retiring, he cherished traveling with his wife, Karen, particularly on cruises, where they made lasting friendships and treasured memories together.
Rich was also known for his larger-than-life personality, sharp wit, and unfiltered honesty. He had a famously dry, offbeat sense of humor and a way of saying what others only thought—usually to laughter. While his delivery could be gruff, those closest to him knew his heart was kind, his intentions loving, and his loyalty unwavering.
Rich is survived by his devoted wife, Karen Ritzo, with whom he shared a deeply loving and strong partnership; his daughter, Dawn (Victor) Arbelaez; his son, Richard “Ricky” Ritzo; their mother, JoEllen Darling; and his adored grandchildren, Aiden and Audrey Arbelaez. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins, all of whom he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chivert and Mary Sanzotta Ritzo, and his beloved siblings: Theresa (Nick) Carsia, Mary (Andrew) DeFelice, Carmen (Doris) Ritzo, Albert (Marion) Ritzo, and Frances (Gabriele) Tattoni.
A devout Catholic and a man of great faith, Rich believed deeply in placing Christ at the center of life. He laid a strong spiritual foundation for his family, teaching by example the importance of prayer, trust in God, and reliance on Christ through every season of life.
In a moment marked by both sorrow and grace, Rich’s passing coincided with that of his beloved nephew, Nick Carsia, with whom he shared a deep bond—a quiet reminder of the ties that transcend this life.
Though our hearts are broken, we take comfort in the promise Rich held so dear. As his favorite Scripture reminds us, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). We find peace in knowing that he has been welcomed home by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and reunited with the family members who went before him. When God called him home, a joyful reunion awaited—a celebration of love fulfilled and faith rewarded.
Rich will be remembered for his steadfast devotion, entrepreneurial spirit, unmistakable personality, and the enduring legacy of faith, service, and love that will continue to guide and comfort all who knew him.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Viator Catholic Church on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at 11:00 am, located at 2461 East Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, NV 89121. Following the Mass, a private gathering will be held from 1:00pm - 5:00pm for invited guests. The family deeply appreciates all the love and support they have received and respectfully requests privacy during this time.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Rich’s memory to Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, the Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada, or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, organizations that reflect his faith, values, and lifelong commitment to service, family, and community.
