“RJ” Christensen in Pocatello, Idaho, where RJ was studying pharmacy. After living a brief time
in Salina, Utah, the family moved to Moscow, Idaho to what we commonly refer to as the “red
house”, because of it’s bright Norwegian red exterior. Her younger brothers, Stephen Andrew
and John Amundsen, also joined the family while living in Moscow. Ora was employed in
secretarial capacities with the LDS institute of religion and RJ became a pharmacist, practicing
for over forty years. As a child, Ruth became an avid reader, something she later instilled in her
children and grandchildren. The grandkids were blessed by having Grandma Ruthie read to
them, gift them books for their birthdays, and even pay them to read as an incentive. Ruth also
learned to play the piano and the organ. She played the organ at church and taught her
grandchildren how to play the piano.
Ruth enrolled in the dental hygiene program at Idaho State University, where she graduated
with a degree in dental hygiene. While in college, she met her husband Larry Allred by an
introduction through his cousin, Ruth’s roommate, Phyllis Hunt. Their first date was to a
valentine dance. Larry often quipped that Ruth was attracted to his 1954 Chevrolet. After
courting and graduation, Larry and Ruth were married on September 1st, 1967 in the Salt Lake
City temple and then moved to Moscow, Idaho shortly after where they lived for two years. Ruth
worked as a dental hygienist to two dentists while Larry finished college. After Larry graduated,
the two lovebirds moved to Boise, Idaho where Larry taught Spanish and English at Valleyview
High School while Ruth continued her career as a dental hygienist.
In 1971, Larry applied as a special agent for the FBI, which started a long career in law
enforcement. Due to his employment, Ruth and Larry were transferred to Los Angeles where
they lived for around two years. While in LA, Ruth and Larry were blessed to adopt a beautiful
baby girl, Christina Margaret. They were overjoyed by the addition to their family. The three of
them moved to El Paso, Texas where they spent the next four years, Ruth caring for their new
baby girl while Larry fought crime with the FBI.
It was while they were living in El Paso that Ruth and Larry were again blessed to adopt a
baby boy, Ryan Jack. As luck would have it, Larry was offered a transfer to the Seattle FBI
office. The Allreds lived happily in Issaquah, Washington for six years, enjoying the early years
of raising their children and creating many fond memories.
Due to another FBI transfer, Ruth and Larry set out for Hurst, Texas during the summer of
1982, where they spent the next eight years. Ruth went back to working in dental hygiene for a
time, as well as working customer service for American Airlines. Larry continued working as a
special agent in the Fort Worth FBI office, as well as serving as the Bishop of our ward. Christy
and Ryan attended school while in Hurst, Christy graduating from L.D. Bell High School and
Ryan finishing Bedford Junior High. Hurst was a great place for the Allred family, with many
wonderful friends from church and the neighborhood. The Allreds were sad to leave their
friends, but were looking forward to living closer to family in the west.
After looking at several options for transfer with the FBI, Larry and Ruth decided on Las
Vegas, Nevada, in part to be closer to Ruth’s parents, Ora and RJ. They packed up the house in
Texas and drove to Las Vegas in the summer of 1990 where they have lived ever since.
In Las Vegas, Ruth and Larry have found many wonderful friends, particularly in the Silver
Springs Ward, where they have lived in the same house over the years. Shortly after their move,
Christy attended college at BYU, while Ryan attended high school at Green Valley. Christy met
James Willhite while in the MTC, preparing to serve missions for the church. They got married
after returning from their missions in August of 1995. Three years later, the Willhites were
blessed with Monica, Ruth and Larry’s first grandchild. The blessings kept coming with the birth
of Jake, Josh, Ellie and Lauren. Watching the grandchildren grow up has brought such joy to
their lives, loving all the experiences and firsts that come with grandchildren.
Larry retired from the FBI after 25 years of service in 1996 and then worked for the Nevada
Attorney General for another ten years. Upon Larry’s retirement in 2008, Ruth and Larry turned
their attention to becoming world travelers, or as they called it “cruisers”. They were fortunate
enough to share twenty-five cruises, some of which with family or friends, visiting dozens of
countries and beautiful scenery along the way.
In 2023, Ruth and Larry were blessed with their first great grandchild Jay Jay Okungbowa,
born to Monica and husband Johnny. He has brought such joy to their lives, Ruth loved the roll
of being a great grandmother.
With great sadness, Ruth passed away on Oct 3rd after battling cancer for over a year. Her
spirit and personality were strong, but her body got too sick and failed her. Ruth leaves behind
her husband of 57 years, two children, four grandchildren and a great grandchild. Ruth will be
dearly missed by her family and friends. All who knew her will cherish their memories with her
and the love that she shared with them.
A visitation for Ruth will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 410 N Valle Verde Dr, Henderson, NV 89014. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, October 8, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, 410 N Valle Verde Dr, Henderson, NV 89014.
