Sherrell William Wylie, Jr. a devoted family man and distinguished veteran, surrounded by his children and grandchildren in his last days, passed away peacefully on March 4. 2025, at the age of 95 in Henderson, NV. He was a Nevada resident since 1971, but particularly a resident in the Henderson area since 1997. Born on September 26, 1929, in Denison, TX. Sherrell lived a life marked by service, dedication, and exploration.
He graduated from Tyler High School in 1946, where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and Sea Scout, laying the foundation for a life committed to excellence and leadership. Sherrell pursued higher education at Texas A & M University, earning a bachelors degree in business administration in 1950. During his time there, he was also an active member of the ROTC.
Sherrell's commitment to his country was exemplified by his 27-year career in the United States Air Force, where he served as a fighter pilot from 1950 until his retirement in 1977 as a Lieutenant Colonel. His bravery and skill were recognized in 1965 when he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. It was during his service in Okinawa, Japan, at Kadena Air Force Base that he met and married the love of his life, Hideko in 1963, and they welcomed their son, Bill, in 1965. Their daughter, Nancy, was later welcomed in 1969 after a move to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. After retiring from the Air Force, Sherrell continued his service to the nation through a career in government contracting with the military. His dedication extended beyond his professional life, as he actively volunteered with the Girl Scouts of America in the 1980s and later with Green Valley United Methodist Church in the late 1990s. Sherrell remained a loyal supporter of his alma mater, Texas A & M University alumni association. After his final retirement in 1996, while home planning his future travels, he made plenty of time to spend with his daughter and grandson and his various school and sports endeavors. A relaxing weekend would include lunch al fresco, or just sitting in the sun with an iced Americano. Boundless travels to California to support 2 of his grandchildren in various sporting activities as well as visits with them and his son for the holidays. He also enjoyed travels to England, Ireland, and Scotland. More times than not, his itineraries would include air museums both domestically and internationally as his love and enthusiasm for aviation continued throughout his entire life. Incidentally, by 2016 he had accumulated over 1.2 million miles with Delta Airlines.
Known for his quiet confidence, Sherrell was a loyal friend and a role model to his children and grandchildren. He was family-oriented, humorous, and supportive, never putting a foot wrong. His legacy of integrity and honor will be cherished by his children and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents Ruth And Sherrell W. Wylie, Sr. and his darling wife.
He is survived by his son Bill Wylie and Jeanine Acton; daughter Nancy Wylie: grandson Kellen and his wife Madalena (Vivola) Wylie with their son Luke; grandson Garrett Smith and Jessica Rodriguez: and granddaughter Jordan Wylie.
In closing, we reflect on the words of John Gillespie Magee, Jr., in "High Flight," a fitting tribute to a man who spent his life soaring above and beyond, and a Traditional Irish Blessing, which echoes the warmth and grace Sherrell brought into the lives of those he touched. May Sherrell find eternal peace and may his spirit continue to inspire and guide us. As scripture assures us in Nahum 1:7. "The LORD is good. a stronghold in the day of distress; He cares for those who trust in Him. May Sherrell rest in the palm of God's hand.
A graveside service for Sherrell was held Wednesday, March 26, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Palm Eastern Cemetery, 7600 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89123.
