Shirley Ann Barber, 83, passed peacefully on January 26, 2018, at her home, in Las Vegas, with her loving husband by her side, following a long and brave battle with Alzheimer's. Shirley was born November 26, 1934, in Winston Salem, North Carolina, the youngest daughter of William and Carrie (Barber) Gaither.
She earned a B.A. Degree from the HBU, Virginia Union University and a Master Degree in Elementary Education from Wright State University. She married Maj. Howard Barber, U.S. Air Force (ret.) on April 15, 1958, who was the wind beneath her wings for 59 years. Together, they had four children.
Shirley, lovingly known as "Sunshine," was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She served as a dedicated educator, an innovative elementary school principal, a passionate community activist and a Trustee of the Clark County School District School Board. She served and chaired many diverse committees in Clark County, tirelessly advocating for equity and accessibility for all. Shirley led by example, admired for her commitment, courage and conviction realizing significant improvements both in education and the communities she served. She earned many accolades both at the national and state level for her services, including the naming of an elementary school in her honor in Henderson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Lonnie, William, Napoleon, and John; and sisters, Lillie, Geraldine, Evolia, Lillie, Odessa, Azerrene and Mozella.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Howard; children, Bryant Barber, Karen Barber, Loren (Greg) White and Bruce (Judy) Barber; six grandchildren, Angela, Lawrence, Blake, Blaire, Austin and Kennedy; sister, Jaye Dixon; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
For those wishing to attend, visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Monday, February 12, with service following, both at Palm Mortuary, 1600 South Jones Blvd, Las Vegas. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 13, at Palm Valley View Memorial Park, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas.
