I worked with Veronica for a little over a year and we realized we had a lot in common. We were the same age and we both immigrated to the US when we were kids. We exchanged stories of our similar experiences. She was a very hard worker and it was clear she was family oriented.  I am glad I got to know and work with her for the time that I did. I pray for her and her beautiful family. So long my friend. 

From disliking each other when we met 30 years ago,to becoming best friends. This is the first time I come back to Vegas and you're not here to greet me. It was so hard to drive up to your house and walk down the stairs and know I wasn't going to see you. It was even harder to walk into your room and not see your smile and you saying, "gracias a dios que ya estan aqui". My friend, this was the first time in all my visits, (which have been many)that we don't go on  our, family tradition. Don't worry Vero the visits will not end here. Just like I promised you, the tradition will continue. They will never be the same without you, but they will continue. I will forever be a part of your family's life. I will be here for them and reel them in, if needed, just like you asked me to do. My dear friend, I can't put into words how I'm feeling right now and the pain that my heart feels. But even though it's hard for all of us, we all know that you are in a better place now. You are no longer feeling the pain that you didn't want us to know that you were in. Rest in peace now, for you have accomplished what you had to on this earth. It's now time for you to watch over all of us from heaven. Be gentle with all the angels that you have to teach something to. Don't be so "bossy"... lol  💕 luv u 💕 til we meet again. 

I met Vero when I first started working with Metro in 2007. She first impressed me at the Christmas parties because, year after year, her & one other woman would be on the dance floor all night in heels (with no pain). But I really got to know her once I moved to grave shift. She was very smart, welcoming & helpful. Like the whole crew, I found out that she was also a joker. Except with her, I saw that she couldn't help but guide the person through the prank. There was a certain hour in the morning when we knew it was almost time to go home because almost randomly she would just start giggling. Those late nights hit us in different ways. So, during those last few hours with her laughing at an early night joke, we would smile & knew we made it through the night. 

One Thanksgiving potluck, I put that I would bring dressing. When the list got to her, she looked at me & said, "really Darrell!?!" I was confused & asked what she had against dressing.  Once we realized that she thought I meant salad dressing, we had another crazed, late night discussion on the differences between dressing & stuffing.

Also, I remember there was a time when we were helping another section with their backlog. After an upgrade in the system we couldn't upload & send like we did before. I learned that night how technically savvy Vero was because she created a new procedure for us & our supervisor wrote her a commendation. 

Out of all the impressive things about Vero, what impressed me most was when she became a Senior & trained the new hires. The thing that impressed me was when I realized how much of an impact she had on all the new coworkers she just met. She had only been with them for a couple years & they had that same strong bond that we formed on the night shift. They only got a piece of her laughter, her crazy stories, her knowledge, her spirit but that was enough to make a positive imprint on their souls just like she did with all of us.

I don’t know how to start mom...there aren’t enough words on this planet to describe, explain or express the LOVE I have for you and how much you mean to me. Yes my dad made me into the man I am but I have you to thank for the person/human I am today. Thank you for always being the voice in the back of my head when I was planning to do something stupid “ándale hijo de tu ching....” (I think you know the rest), because of that voice I’ve made very little bad choices in my life. The bad choices I have made, you’ve always taught me to deal with them, work with it and most importantly learn from it...which I continue to do. So to that I say thank you for always being my rock and for being the best mother I could ever ask for...and thank you for giving Cancer hell for the last 2 and a half years of your life in order to spend more time by our side. Please rest, your battle has ended and I’ll take over from here...I’ll take care of dad and Krystal.

I’m glad I got to hear you say, thank you for letting me be in the labor room with all my grandkids. You were my camera women and my hype women in there, for all 4 of my babies, take the pictures and video taping it even though we weren’t allowed to! Hahaha, but you always found a way to be sneaky and you did it! Thank you for being the best second mom anyone could ask for. You were always there for me whenever I needed your advice. Thank you for always saying yes to babysit, just so me and Vic could have some time for us to be together, which you would always say that it’s very important. Thank you for everything that you did for us. For being the glue to the family. For always being happy and never seeing you mad. You always made a way to go on vacation even when money was tight and l hope we try to be like that because life is short and we have to enjoy it now that we are here. Thank you for being an awesome Grandma to my kids! Wish they can have you for many many many more years but God wanted another angel with him. You will always be in my heart, I will miss you very much! I love you so much!  

I met Vero about 4 yrs ago at work. At first I thought she was a little too forward (pushy lol) for my taste, but she was my trainer so I couldn’t say much. I was her first trainee in work cards, needless to say somethings we learned together as the training continued. At first, I used to ask a lot of questions and I also wanted to know why it was done that way. Sometimes she didn’t know the answer so will say “Hijola” (in a loud voice) just do it the way I’m showing you to do it lol.... from then on we created a bond that no one could break us apart. We became the best friends anyone  could ever dream of having. It was as if we knew each other since we were little. We shared stories, food, Starbucks, dreams, goals, chismes, laughter, etc etc . Every time we had lunch, we will go to the lunch room and seat just the 2 of us and laughed so hard that we often forgot there were other co-workers seating by us. I can’t forget one time, we were eating cucumbers with chamois (our favorite), she loved it so much that when we finished all the cucumbers there was still chamois left on the plate, she wouldn’t dare waste it, so all of the sudden she starts licking the plate to make sure none of the chamois was going to waste. At that moment, I realized she considered me like family 💕 I couldn’t stop laughing. That was the kind of friendship we shared, we both felt very comfortable as we didn’t judge each other.  You were such a bad ass mom, wife, daughter, sister & friend 💕Thank you Vero for welcoming my family and I into your loving family. For always taking care of my special eating needs, for always being there in the good times and the not so good ones. For pushing yourself to go to Kayla’s 🏀 games even tough you didn’t feel your best. Thank you for loving me unconditionally and making me feel like part of your family ❤️❤️ May you RIP my querida Panchita 😘😘 I miss you mucho already. There's way to many memories that I can talk about but I'm choosing to share how Veronica and I met, 30+ years ago. 
I had just started to work at my very first job at "Boston Stores" in the end of October 1989. 3 days into me working there, Vero shows up to work on a Monday, mind you, I hadn't seen or met her in my first 3 days there. So, she comes up to me and starts telling me what to do. No, actually starts bossing me around. I, at that point look at her and say, "and who are you"? she answers, "your boss". I tell her "no you're not, Rosie is my boss. You just started today and i've been here for 3 days already". Well, it turns out that she had been working there for some time already. She had just came back from maternity leave from her daughter's Sandy's birth.  Needless to say, we really didn't like each other for about 2 months or so. She was so bossy and would alway give me the hardest orders to work on and I disliked her each and every time. And the feeling was mutual for her too. God had a very funny way of playing a trick on us. I won't get into specifics but right around December we became really good friends. She opened up her family to me. Her kids, to this day call me "tia". Many years into our friendship we shared our story with her kids and we would cry, laugh and joke about how they all agreed with me on, how bossy Vero really was. My dear best friend earned her angel wings way to soon. But I guess god really needed a "bossy" angel to help him in heaven. I will forever miss you. Til we meet again.❤

It’s been a couple of days since you left this world and still can’t believe it, our relationship started over 40 years ago and all this time I learned a lot from you. You are a warrior, a fighter and I thank god that you were my beloved friend. I will always missed you but I know for a fact that we will meet again in heaven for that’s where my Verito will be. Gone but never forgotten. 

Veronica was the best Sr. Lest a   supervisor could have.  Not only was she a great employee,   she was a great friend.  And boy could she cook! She made the best Birria and ribs with her homemade version of BBQ sauce the Gafford's ever tasted. She was so full of life and love. You will be truly missed but never forgotten❣

Something about Veronica is that she was always there when you needed her. She’s a loving and kind person and always knows what to say in every situation she is put in. Since I could remember I’ve been calling her mom because she’s been like a mother to me for years she’s been there for me, feeding me (by feeding I mean raiding your fridge after school), and helping me out telling me what’s wrong from right. She is one of my favorite people and is someone I really looked up to. I’m glad I had the pleasure of knowing someone like her because she was one of a kind. 

My grandma is someone that hard to describe. She’s a perfect women, someone that can be looked up to, talk to, have fun with, but most of all she’s was so loving. I can’t choose one favorite memory with my ma, grandma, but I have separate memories with her. We were making tortillas for Christmas and Krystal and I were messing around making different shapes and I had made a heart for her and she yells “what are you doing make a circle!” And I got all sad but then she hugs me and says “it’s beautiful and thank you”. Her comforting hug was everything. Everyday after school talking, drinking coffee, watching building home shows or cooking shows, and falling asleep together they were the most comforting days. I wanted to badly to say thank you for all that she’s done for me and everyone she’s met but she knows that. She fought the hardest fight for anyone to go through... her fight for over 3 years and 5 years of unknowing... you are the strongest person I’ll ever meet and and I’m so proud so proud to call you my grandma. I’m so happy I got to spend this time in my life with you and I couldn’t think of anything else NOR anyone else      You are a true true blessing to me and our family. I will never forget about you and I will always love you until the day I see you again  and even then I’ll love you still because you are my family. Now that you aren’t suffering I’ll tell you all the chisme when i see you again and we will have good laughs. Watch over us with my tio Eric up there until we can meet again. Mom what can I say, as much as I try the words are just not enough, let me start with ... 'Thank you for being the best mom I could ever ask for'.... I will always remember how growing up you taught us the importance of family. I remember early Saturday mornings waking up to Spanish music, dreading waking up because we knew it was time to clean. On the other hand I remember Sunday mornings gathered in the living room for breakfast and movies together. I can still picture you sitting on the carpet of our converted garage on Lana Dr with your electric skillet making us eggs, bacon, and pancakes. I remember our Wednesday night game nights where we would sit on the dining room table and play board games as a family, of course you were always making sure my dad was not cheating when we played monopoly. I remember when you would say that everything you did was for a reason and when I became a mom I would understand, and like always you were right, as soon as I became a mom I could understand that unconditional love you had for us. I still find myself hearing you in me when I say things to my girls that you once said to me. Thank you for all these memories mom, these are only a few from the many you left behind and I will cherish them for as long as I live.  I love you Mom! 

My mom was the best mom anyone could have asked for, she was fun, loving, kind, smart, strong, and tough when she needed to be. She gave us some of the best memories together. I remember when we were younger we would stay up super late waiting for her to get off of work, sometimes she would even wake us up when she got home and we would go eat the midnight specials at Arizona Charlie’s. We would be super tired, eating and laughing and falling asleep, but it was something that we looked forward to anytime we could go. Even our neighborhood friends would want to spend the night so they could go with us. It was honestly the best time together. She would also get us a virgin strawberry daiquiri to share, they were so delicious, even now I like them virgin better then with alcohol. Our house was the house everyone wanted to go to because how amazing she was. Man...those were good times. I am so thankful that God blessed me with such an incredible mother and such an amazing role model. I aspire to be a mother/woman like you, we will always keep your memory alive. If my daughter ever needs help shaving her legs at the hospital before giving birth I will be there for her, like you were there for me. You will truly be missed, thank you for just being you mom. I love you. ❤️ 

We met Veronica on our way to a Dodgers game, and she immediately made such a positive impression on us.  We felt so comfortable with her, like we were related.  She told us stories of her time living in L.A., and we could immediately see how strong and devoted to her family she was.  Ever since then, whenever we'd see her at events or parties, she lit up the room.  I loved those stories, and her positivity was contagious.   

God bless your family during this time.  You are all in our prayers and thoughts.

Prima hermana siempre admire su inteligencia, independiencia y atencion a los demos y trato amable por igual.  Si era una chingona de admirar fuerte de decision y caracter, pero con un corazon tan grande que muchos tuvimos el gran honor de disfrutar.  Siempre prudente en todo y pensando en los demas primero que en ella misma. Llo un dia le platique mi pena y solo me me dice esta cabron y llo senti que me apoyo con solo esa frase.  Y supe que ella aunque si era directa y no se andaba por las ramas comprendia y sabia a quien y cuando decir lo que ella pudiese pensar. Te extrañare prima hermana y amo lo que le heredaste a tus hijos ese mismo corazon grande y humilde.  Hiciste junto con tu esposo un excelente trabajo como hija, hermana, prima-hermana, esposa, madre, abuela y por seguro amiga.  Fuiste especial para muchos de nosotros Vuronica.  

My mother growing up would take us, children, to many places. On a bright sunny day, my mother and I decided to hike at one of the red rock canyon trails that we haven’t hiked through yet. Just the 2 of us walked, ran, jumped through every cranny of that trail. We took a backpack filled with water and snacks. We sat on a rock near a tiny pond and ate while talking. As the sun was going down we thought it would be best to head back for the day. But I guess luck wasn’t on our side. We ended up getting lost.  It was dark and I was scared. I ended up crying saying “ what do we do?! I’m never going to see papi again!!” She then said in attempt to calm me down “it’ll be okay because we have each other” I stopped crying and pushed forward and ended up finding a couple who were also lost. Together we made it out alive. I will never forget this fragment of a memory that I have of my mom, not only because it was scary and traumatic but because I was experiencing all these emotions with my mom which made it very special. Since that day we treated that moment as an experience to look back upon to joke about. I could never ask for a better mother.  Mother of mine I know you’ll be just fine so stay resting and we’ll keep on sharing these memories of you to keep you alive. As they say everyone dies twice once when they are no longer breathing on this earth and twice when their name is said for the last time. Veronica, Mom, Mommy, Mother of Mine don’t worry you won’t be dying twice. ♥️

I will always remember the time that you came to Florida and had a reggaeton dance battle in our living room with my tio Victor. I’ve always admired your personality. You always brightened up the room as soon as you walked in. Always had a smile on your face. You really did grab life by the horns. You handled everything so gracefully. You’re truly an inspiration to all of our family. You fought til the end like a true warrior. Thank you for all your words of encouragement and your advice. You will forever be missed Tia. Love you!

You made things look so easy and you made them happened. I can say you did live to the fullest.  You where always full of energy and energized those around you.  Your positive vibes where contagious.  You showed me how to be strong and to put myself before others.  Nothing selfish or wrong about that right prima Prima Comadre.  You have left nothing but great memories and a great family that we love and that will continue to be part of us.  My sincerest condolences to the Hernandez Family.  Love you all!

Fuiste un ejemplo para mi prima. Te dedicaste a estsr con la familia en.las buenas y las malas. Tuviste tiempo para todos. Tu alegria a pesar de tu enfermedad.. no querias perderte las platicas.. nunca te olvidare. Nunca.olvidare tu ejemplo que a la vida hay que sonreirle aunque por dentro estemos destrozados..  te amo y no es un adios.. sino un hasta luego.. 😭

En la reunión de primas que por desgracia es a la única  que e podido ir mire a Veronica más delgada y le dije wow a dieta y me dijo no estaba esperando que vinieras para decirte no se me asia bien mandarte un mensaje o hablarte por teléfono te lo quería decir yo para mi tú eres como mi hermana mayor y pues yo se que te va a doler me puse nerviosa y me dijo tengo cancer no savia que desir me agarró de sorpresa desgraciado cancer otra vez destrosando Nuestras vidas llore como no a serlo y me dijo no te preocupes todo va a estar bien qué pasó primita por que me mentiste 😢 descansa en paz primita chula 

Veronica was my cousin and growing up we were neighbors and spent a lot of time together. We walked to school together, took lunch together, we were even in drill team together. We were best friends!! Vero was more then my cousin, she was like a sister. We fought like sisters too but we quickly made up. She was my confidant, my shoulder to cry on, she always had my back. When we were teenagers I would tell her that I was older and she had to respect me, and if I told her to do something... well she better do it  because I was a year older then her, actually it was only 45 days, but since my birthday was before hers then she had to respect me !!!! She never forgot that and once we were adults, without fail she would call me on my birthday just to remind me that I WAS A YEAR OLDER THEN HER!!! SHE CALLED ME EVERY BIRTHDAY !!! Boy did she tease me when I turned 30 35 40!!! Not so funny now she would say. She got the last laugh. I’m really going to miss the birthday phone calls...
 
 Last time I visited Vero I had a feeling I wouldn’t see her alive again so saying bye was really emotional. We hugged, I gave her a kiss and I told her “ you did good Vero, you did real good” and she looked at me and said “I did, didn’t I” yes you did !!!

Hace aproximadamente 40 años fui de visita con Veronica a Los Angeles, ella muy feliz me enseñó un vestido morado que le habían comprado, del cual me enamoré desde que lo mire, durante los dias que estuve de visita no perdía la oportunidad de decirle que me regalará el vestido y cada vez ella me decía que no, porque era nuevo, ya casi para regresarme se me ocurrió decirle que si me lo intercambiaba yo le compraría unos calzones, por fin la convencí y me regrese a Mexicali con mi vestido morado, pero olvide un detalle no compre los calzones!!, pasaron los años y en más de alguna ocación me recordó que no habia saldado mi deuda, debo confesar que apenas hace menos de 2 semanas pague mi deuda lamentablemente no pude hacerlo personalmente, pero ella supo que nuestra deuda estaba saldada después de 40 años, prima te amo, nos vemos nuestra próxima  reunion de primas Guinda/negro, un besito al cielo 💜💜

I worked with Veronica at LVMPD for 5 years on the graveyard shift.  One night in the winter I came into work in a new coat that she complimented me about it and commented how warm it was. From then on I'd have my coat hanging off the back of my chair. And every time I left my post for a lunch or restroom break I'd return to find my coat missing. She had such a wonderful, playful sense of humor. She was generous with her help from those of us who found ourselves needing assistance or clarification. And boy could she cook! The pot lucks were delicious. I shall miss this beautiful soul so very much, but I am certain she is now in the arms of God who will take away her pain and she will rest in peace and God's love.
