Bret was born on November 1, 1967, in Austin, Texas, to Shirley and Michael Elliott. He attended Leander High School, where he met the love of his life, Susan. The two married on June 20, 1992, and together built a beautiful life raising their four children: Ty, Amber, Jenna, and Clay.
Anyone who knew Bret knew he was a man who lived life on his own terms. Strong-willed, independent, and never afraid to speak his mind, he had a larger-than-life personality. Affectionately known as “Pops” or “Potts”, Bret was a father figure to far more than his four children, offering guidance, strength, and friendship to so many throughout his life.
Bret loved fishing, hunting, golfing, and traveling the world with his beloved wife. He especially cherished sharing his love of fishing and hunting with his two sons. But above all, he loved his family deeply and wholeheartedly. He was a devoted husband, proud father, and loving grandfather.
Bret dedicated 17 years to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, where he served as a respected leader, mentor, and friend to those he served alongside. He was known for his strong work ethic, discipline, integrity, dedication and willingness to help others.
Bret is survived by his loving wife, Susan Elliott; his four children, Ty Elliott (Katelyn Elliott), Amber Vaughn (Tyler Vaughn), Jenna Elliott, and Clay Elliott (Emily Hudson); and his two beautiful grandchildren, Blayke Vaughn and Carsyn Vaughn. He is also survived by his mother, Shirley Elliott, and his sister, Stefanie Nix (Carl Nix). He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Elliott.
Bret spent his final days surrounded by loved ones, free of pain, sharing stories and laughter, with his sense of humor shining through until the very end. Though he will be deeply missed, his love, laughter, and the memories he created will live on through his family, friends, and the many people who were fortunate enough to call him Pops.
A celebration of Bret’s life will be held at Fellowship Church in Liberty Hill, Texas, on October 27, 2026 at 1PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you to donate to a charity or rescue group of your choice.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been part of Bret’s life. Thank you for the love, friendship, and countless memories that helped make his life so full and meaningful.
An outside gathering will occur immediately after the service. Water and soft drinks and Bret’s favorite meal will be served. Please bring comfortable seating and any additional drinks you may want. Directions to be provided at the service.
