Carole Ann Stein was born on November 4, 1937, in the Bronx, New York, to Anne and William “Bill” Jones. She grew up in the Bronx alongside her beloved sister, Geraldine (“Geri”), and brother, William (“Bill”) Jones, cherishing fond memories of family outings, neighborhood stories, and countless photographs that captured those moments.
Carole attended Sacred Heart Catholic High School in the Bronx, and after graduating, began working for a large advertising company in New York City. Not long after, she met the love of her life, Gerard (“Jerry”) Stein, and the two were married in August 1958. Together, they eventually settled in New Jersey—living in Middletown, Atlantic Highlands, and later Shrewsbury—where they raised six children.
While living in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, Carole volunteered as a softball coach alongside her husband for their daughters’ team, the Gumdrops, proudly leading them to a championship. Later, she fulfilled a lifelong passion of reading books by opening her own used bookstore, The Bookstop, in Shrewsbury.
Carole and Jerry eventually left New Jersey and made homes in Kentucky, Texas, and Virginia, always staying close to their children. Over the years, Carole developed a love for raising and breeding Golden Retrievers, eventually showing them in competitions across the country and proudly earning several blue ribbons.
Carole was known for her strong independence and her knack for fixing just about anything around the house—she was truly the family’s go-to repairwoman. A devoted sports fan, she never missed watching a New York Yankees game, no matter where she lived.
In 2018, Carole moved to Texas to be near her family in the Austin area. She spent her last year at Windchimes Assisted Living, where she was cared for with great compassion and affection. Her New York attitude and straightforward nature made her well-liked by staff and residents alike.
Carole is survived by her children and their spouses, including Susan and Paul Jarvis; Jeanne Brooks; Chris Stein; James and Cathi Stein; Billy Stein; and Patti and Danny Flunker. She is also survived by several grandchildren, including Shannon Jarvis, Abigail Stein, Carly Stein, Austin Brooks, and Hunter Brooks, along with three great-grandchildren from Shannon Jarvis.
In addition, Carole is survived by her sister, Geraldine (“Geri”) and husband Michael Smith; her sister-in-law, Susan Jones; and many beloved nieces and nephews on both the Jones and Stein sides of the family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anne and Bill Jones; her husband, Gerard Stein; her brother, Bill Jones; her brother-in-law, John Stein and his wife Mary Stein; her nephew, Vinney Stein; and her beloved granddaughter, Megan Jarvis.
Carole will be remembered and missed for her independent spirit, her cherished stories about the Jones family tree and the way she lived life in her own unique way.
