

James was born March 17th, 1942 on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. James' family, his father, Joseph, and his mother, Virginia, moved to Calumet City, Illinois when Jim was 8 years old. A pretty little girl named Janet lived just a couple blocks away. Her family also moved from Chicago's South Side. Jim and Janet attended the same grade school and high school and started dating when Jim was a junior and Janet was a freshman. He graduated from Northern Illinois University with a degree in Political Science and Economics. In 1966, Jim and Janet were married in Olympia Fields, Illinois. They lived in Arlington Heights, Illinois where they had two children together - Michael Lawrence, born 1970, and Laura Lynn, born 1972. They moved to Davenport, Iowa in 1974.
Jim worked in Claims for Allstate Insurance and John Deere Insurance, then embarked on a sales career with Sentry Insurance and John Hancock Insurance. When he retired from full time work, Jim had several part time jobs including nearly 20 years in maintenance at Weerts Funeral Home in Davenport, Iowa. Jim and Janet moved to Texas to be near their daughter and her family in 2021.
Jim was an avid fan of the Chicago White Sox, and could be found watching them on TV every summer. He was also a fan of the Chicago Bears. He enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, shooting BB guns, collecting pocketknives, sitting outside in the sunshine and having “happy hour” in his garage.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Janet, their children, Michael Meyers (Stephanie) of Thompson’s Station, Tennessee, and Laura VanDerGinst (Anthony) of Leander, Texas, grandchildren, Jake, Sarah and Joey, a niece and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to High Point Fellowship in Cedar Park, Texas or Bettendorf Christian Church in Bettendorf, Iowa.
