Joe Prestridge, a devoted paw paw, dad, son, friend, brother, proud veteran, and lifelong Mason, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026, at the age of 81. He was born in his childhood home in Nederland, Texas, on December 11, 1944, to Lee and Dollie (Hext) Prestridge, and grew up with his brothers Arnold and Robert. Arnold preceded him in death, and Robert lives in Tennessee.
A man of steadfast commitment, Joe honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he embarked on a long and respected career as Transportation Supervisor for the Nederland Independent School District, where he retired after many years of faithful service. Joe’s dedication extended to his fraternal brothers as well. He was a proud Master Mason and a pillar of Nederland Lodge No. 1368 for an incredible 58 years.
Joe was known for his warm spirit and steady presence. The week’s end seemed a little brighter with his ritual proclamation that its “Big Ole Friday”. An avid outdoorsman, he found his greatest peace in the simple joys of hunting, fishing, and gardening. After retiring, he moved to Woodville, Texas, where he fulfilled a lifelong dream by building a log home with the help of dear friends, a project filled with hard work, laughter, and the bonds of true friendship. In his later years, he moved to Central Texas to be closer to his family, ensuring he was present for the people who mattered most.
While Joe took great pride in his service and career, his greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved son, Derek Prestridge, and his daughter-in-law, Tara (Person) Prestridge, whom he loved as his own daughter. Joe’s heart belonged especially to his granddaughters, Whitney Prestridge, a junior at the University of Texas, and Charleigh Prestridge, a high school senior. His love for his family was deep and enduring, matched only by the immense pride he held for his girls.
Through it all, Joe remained a true Texan in spirit and character with a legacy of innate commitment, strength, and pride that lives on in all who knew him.
