Born on June 11, 1933, in Sweet Home, Texas, Mary was the daughter of John Joseph Pekar and Francis Filomena Fait Pekar. She married the love of her life, Melvin Ray Long, in 1954, and together they built a life centered on faith, family, and hard work until his passing in 2002.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; her beloved daughter, Debby, who passed in 2017; and her parents. One of thirteen children, she is survived by her brother, Bobby Pekar.
A devoted wife, homemaker, mother, and grandmother. Mary was the heartbeat of her home and managed it with grace during her early years of marriage while Melvin worked offshore. Together in life, they built and operated Long’s Remodeling and eventually Long Screen Shop, where Mary served as co-owner and bookkeeper all while continuing to care for her family and home.
Mary and Melvin enjoyed weekend trips to Lake Livingston and creating a home filled with love, laughter, and hospitality. Her home was always open, and her nieces and nephews held a special place in her heart. She faithfully kept up with extended family and was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Mary is survived by her children, Mike Long and wife Patty, Suzie and husband Keith; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild on the way.
She loved gardening, cooking, and caring for others. Her kitchen and home were always open, and she was happiest providing meals, sweets, and comfort to family and friends. Following Melvin’s passing, Mary devoted herself to her faith and service, becoming an active member of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America. She lovingly made rosaries, baked countless cakes for church carnivals, and contributed treats and dishes for potlucks and community gatherings.
Later in life, Mary moved to Austin to be closer to family, leaving old friends behind while making new ones and cherishing time with her great-grandchildren.
Quietly strong, lighthearted, and generous, Mary faced life with courage and grace, even working through three broken bones within eight months. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who supported her during her rehabilitation and times of need.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Hallettsville, Texas, with burial to follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery and a luncheon afterward at the church.
Mary’s legacy of faith, kindness, and quiet strength will live on in all who knew and loved her.
