Michael Joseph McDermott

Michael Joseph McDermott, 93 happy years, was born on May 12th, 1929 in Mullingar, County WestMeath, Ireland. He passed away on April 25th, 2023 in Round Rock, Texas. Mike was one of the friendliest, kindest men you could ever be lucky enough to meet.

With his beloved Irish horseracing reluctantly in his rear-view mirror, Mike emigrated to New York City in 1949 and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951. Over a cold Shiner Bock, Mike would tell you that – other than asking his future wife, Joan, to dance one very memorable night in England in 1954 – his move to America was one of his smartest-ever decisions. After an Air Force career that spanned three continents, he retired as a Master Sergeant in 1976 and moved to Austin, Texas. Mike then began a second career at the University of Texas, Austin, managing the business school’s computer center. Ever the engaging Irishman, Mike truly enjoyed his chats with the thousands of students and faculty he met. He worked at UT for 15 years before retiring in 1993.

Mike made hundreds of friends during his career travels, but nowhere was Mike’s twinkling wit, selfless life approach, and thoughtful encouragement more apparent and appreciated than the times he spent with his family. Mike was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Joan, and his daughter, Anna. Mike is survived by his 4 children, Bernadette (Gus), Michael, Mary (Henry), and Maureen (Scott). He has 6 grandchildren, Patrick, Kate, Jack, Clare, William, and Owen.

Mike McDermott was the Genuine Article, the kind and wildly proud patriarch of a family that loved him so much. Three cheers to the Genuine Article!
