Richard James Skrok, 78, of Leander, Texas, passed away from his battle with cancer on September 20, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. He was born to parents Matthew and Viola Skrok, on 08 April 1943 in Buffalo, New York.

Richard graduated from Bishop Ryan High School in 1961 then worked as a General laborer at Western Electric/AT&T/Lucent Technologies for 39 years and retired back in February of 2000.

Richard first met Florence his soul mate of 63 years in 1958 at a School dance. They remained inseparable and they were married on July 6 1963 in Buffalo New York. Together they raised 4 beautiful children: Karen, Suzanne, Aaron and Jeffrey.

Anyone who knew Richard knew that he was the most loving father and husband a family could ask for. He is survived by Florence his loving wife; his four children, Karen and husband Richard, Suzanne and husband Dale, Aaron and wife Leanne, Jeffrey and wife Erica; his 8 grandchildren Rachelle, Danielle, Sara, Jessica, Amanda, Adam, Gavin and Megan; his 5 great grandchildren Brynn, Kadyn, Bentley, Greyson, Raelyn; his sister Kathy and brother Larry.

Richard was predeceased by his father Mathew, mother Viola, father-in-law Leo and mother-in-law Joanne.

Richard had many things he loved to do such as reading books, doing crossword puzzles, running and dancing. Richard’s passion for running saw him run a total of 26 marathons and a multitude of smaller races, but his crown jewel of races was the New York City Marathon which he ran back in 1991 where he posted a finish time of 3 hours 54 minutes and 47 seconds. Richard also loved to dance and boy could he cut up a rug. It was not uncommon for Richard & Florence to get together with the Country Kickers Group in Omaha NE or the Wild-west group and go country western dancing on Friday & Saturday nights. Richard also loved serving his community and helping others. This was very evident in his service as a volunteer firefighter with Pine Hill Volunteer Fire Department from 1971-1973 in Cheektowaga NY and the La Vista Volunteer Fire Department from 1977-1979 in La Vista NE. He also continued to serve his community by volunteering as a 911 dispatcher and reserve Police Officers in La Vista NE. Richard was also very strong in his faith within the Catholic Church. He was an Honorary member of the Knights of Columbus serving as Deputy Grand Knight, Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator and District Deputy. He also served on the parish council, music ministry, bereavement ministry, loaves & fishes ministry, senior ministry, and as extraordinary minister. Richard touched everybody’s life and made it a point to make all those he encountered feel so important and special. He had a never ending smile and an enormous heart. He would seek you out in a crowd just to see how you were doing.

The family has entrusted Weed-Corley Fish with the arrangements. The visitation will be offered by Deacon Jack Murphy held on October 19, 2021 from 6-8 pm along with a Rosary from 7-8 pm at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Leander Texas. Normally I’m much better with written word but it’s so much harder to boil down a life into a short paragraph, especially a loved one’s life, so I will just say this: Grandpa loved well and was well loved. His impact on this life can be seen in the everyday lives of his family and all those around him. He leaves behind a beautiful legacy. ❤️ We love you and miss you so much!

My favorite memory of Mr. Skrok was from his running days. His route took him on the roads that I travel on when I’m going to work. It was always so great to see him out on the street in the morning as I headed to the office! Brightened my day every time.

I ran thousands of miles with Dick when he and his family resided in Omaha, Nebraska…including the New York City Marathon and Lincoln Marathon. He was a wonderful man and role model to me. He was a kind, honest, genuine and religious man who went straight to heaven. I’m soooooo sorry for your loss, Florence. You meant the world to him.
