Rubel Lucero Jr., 66, passed away peacefully on April 30th, 2022 at St. David’s Medical Center, Round Rock, Texas. He bravely battled many health issues for the past several years but showed courage facing life’s challenges with a smile on his face. With faith and hope he stayed strong and endured to the end.
Rubel met the love of his life in 1976. They married April 15, 1978 in their hometown, Durango, Colorado. They were sealed together for time and all eternity in the Houston Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, March 21, 2002. Together they raised 3 beautiful daughters. His greatest pride and joy was in being a hero to 9 wonderful grandchildren who lovingly called him Papa.
Rubel enjoyed cooking, and worked in various restaurants. He showed his love for food by making everything he cooked look and taste delicious. He could grill a steak to perfection. He often joked that his gravestone caption should read “He ate well”.
Rubel loved working outdoors and gardening. He started his own landscaping business in 1993 and for the past 29 years has been creating beautiful flower beds and flagstone patios throughout northwest Austin and surrounding areas. He was so easy going and even tempered that his crew of guys stayed working for him and became like family.
Rubel was a kind and generous man and never knew a stranger. He made everyone he met into a friend.
Rubel loved fishing. One of his favorite places on Earth is the Animas River in Durango, where he’s caught many a trout. After moving to Texas, he returned to Durango almost every summer. He would tell his siblings, “If you want to see me, you’ll have to come to the river.”
Rubel is survived by his wife, Iris, of 44 years; his daughters: Mandi (Brendan), Megan (James), Trisha (Chad); Grandsons: Taylor, Tanner (Rachel), Mitchell, Hunter, Collin; Granddaughters: Hannah, Kailey, Emma, Kelsi; his son: Jamie; brother: Danny (Wendy); sisters: Dora, Flo (Ray), Mary (Toby), Nancy (John), Jed (Sara), Cindy (Louis); sister-in-law: Marsha; and many nieces and nephews.
