Earl Michael Mease

Local insurance agent E. Michael Mease, a.k.a. “Fel”, died at the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center on Wednesday August 7, 2013, after a lengthy illness. He was the son of Shirley E. (Davids) Achenbach and the late Earl B. Mease, and the husband of Lois Jean (Mark) Mease.

Mike was a graduate of South Lebanon High School in 1965, where he lettered in baseball and basketball. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and attended Reading Business Institute. He continued to participate in local sports, pitching in the Twilight League and playing basketball in various leagues. In 1972, he began an 11 year career officiating basketball and baseball games at various levels of each sport.

He joined the Lebanon Lions Club in 1973 and became deeply involved in providing services to the visually impaired of Lebanon County. He served as President of the local club in 1979, followed by Secretary from 1980-1990, and again from 1995-2012. In 1993, he received the Melvin Jones Award from Lions International, and was also the recipient of the Daniel Walter Award for service. He served as President of the Lebanon County Lions Group and was Assistant Secretary-Treasurer for many years. He served as a board member of SABVI. He was also an active member of the Steitz club.

After the Army, Mike worked at 1st National Bank of Lebanon, and then the Good Samaritan Hospital as Business Office Manager. In 1972, he joined the David A. Byerly Insurance Agency and worked for Dave until Dave’s retirement in 1983; at that time, he purchased the agency, and continued the business until his retirement in 2012.

There was never any doubt where Mike’s sports loyalties lie. He was a dedicated fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, even in the worst seasons, as well as the Phillies. He also enjoyed attending the Big East Basketball Tournament for many years with George, John, and Gigs, although rumor has it that they just went for the food. He also enjoyed playing golf, fishing on his boat the “Hook Me Up”, and time spent in Ocean City, MD.

In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by his daughter Stephanie J. Andreozzi, his son David M. and wife Sheryl C. Mease, and his grandson Alexander R. Andreozzi, all of Lebanon. He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Steven G. Mease.

A memorial service will be held in the St. Mark’s U.C.C. Church, 426 N. 8th Street, Lebanon, Pa., 17046 on Wednesday, August 14th, 2013 at 11:30a.m. A visitation will be held from 9:00a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
