I studied abroad with Emily in England, and was shocked and incredibly saddened to hear this terrible news.  I am so, so sorry for your loss of a daughter and sister.  At times like these life seems completely unfair; how could Emily's life, with so much potential and possibility, be cut so short?  This reminder of life's fragility has given me a renewed desire to truly live, every day, and I will always think of Emily as I seek to do that in her memory.  I am thinking of your family constantly, and remembering all of Emily's incredibly unique qualities.  I regret so much that we won't get to see all things Emily would have continued to accomplish in her life.  I was blessed to have known her.  May you find continued comfort from the many people who loved Emily.

I did not know her, but as a believer in prayer, I sent out a prayer request at my church. I prayed for a peaceful passing and comfort for the family. I know that all of the people who received a text from our church prayed for peace and comfort.Cory Kete asked for prayer and I can't help but think the good Lord is taking real good care of her.

Emily was one of a kind.  Anyone who knew Emily knows this.  And anyone who knew Emily also knows that we could spend the rest of our days on Earth traveling the globe, and we'd still never come even remotely close to encountering another human being in possession of the same dazzling patchwork of character attributes that Emily embodied and that we respected and admired.

She was generous, selflessly offering her time and energy to causes she found to be worthwhile and to people she found to be in need.  She was smart as a whip, and anyone who ever made the mistake of entering into a battle of wits with her, surely knows this all too well.  She was caring, quick to offer a word of encouragement or to offer her support.  She was fair, sure to survey all of the facts and available information before arriving at a conclusion.  She was warm; with an uncanny ability to make anyone she met in her life feel at ease within the first five minutes of introduction (probably more like in the first thirty seconds).  And each of her wonderful character attributes were giftwrapped in her unflappable and unparalleled sense of humor that made all of us laugh until we cried.

I'll always remember our time together in college.  I'll never forget the time she came up to visit me at my friend's lake house in New Hampshire; and how as she entered the cabin's front door -- before saying hello to anyone -- with her fists held high, loudly proclaiming the state's motto, "Live free or die!"  I'll often search my gmail account for past conversations we've had.  I'll always think of her whenever I send out a mass email asking for contributions to whatever race, walk or charity endeavor I next find myself involved in, as she was always among the first to respond and make a donation.

Aside from constantly making us smile and laugh uncontrollably, Emily also made everyone around her want to be a better person.  And we're all better for having known her.  While none of us will likely ever reach the heights of the bar that Emily has set in this regard, every time we jump in an attempt to graze it, we know for sure that we'll be reminded of her bright spirit and the indelible mark she has left on each of our lives and hearts.  

Emily, my heart aches today and my mind struggles to make sense of this, but I know one thing for sure and that's that my life is enriched forever because you were a part of it; and for that I sincerely thank you.  I love you, and I'll miss you (a lot).  Godspeed, my friend; on you go to your next adventure.

My husband and I had the opportunity to meet your lovely daughter Emily when we visited our daughter Shelly in England when they were in the study abroad program together.  Even though we only spent a couple of days or so with Emily that week, she made a great impression on both of us.  I remember fondly her sense of humor and sweet smile and laughter. After graduation we talked often about journalism since we both worked at community newspapers. Emily was an amazing, wonderful, funny, witty person who touched so many lives. My heart aches for you all during this tough time. I went to college and spent the year abroad in England with Emily (I'm a good friend of Tara's). I can't express to you how much she touched me during those years, especially for someone I wasn't extremely close to. I wanted to be around her all of the time, because she made me laugh so incredibly much (especially when she would tell us bedtime stories of the day's events). I envied her perfect use of sarcasm and was drawn to her (as many of us were). I remember always telling my parents about her and how funny she was, and they met her in England and remember her fondly as well. I just wanted to let you know how much your daughter (and sister) has made an impression on me and that I will always look up to the way she approached life. During times of tragedy, including 9/11 when we were all together there, she had a beautiful way of making the hardest times seem more palatable.
