George J. Gettler Jr

George J. Gettler, Jr., 62, Lebanon, passed away on Friday July 17, 2015 in the Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of Melanie K. Baker Gettler with whom he celebrated a 42nd wedding anniversary in January. George was born in Lebanon on July 9, 1953 a son of the late George J., Sr. and Arlene Craun Gettler. He was employed many years as a welder and worked for several local companies including the former Cleaver Brooks; but was well known in Lebanon County for his 48 years of service to the community in many areas of fire service. He began his career in fire service at the age of 14. He presently was the Chief and president of the Rural Security Fire Company. He had served as the county fire marshal for many years and also as an Assistant Chief and former Captain of the Lebanon City Fire Department. He was a member of the Rescue Hose Co. #4 and the Hook and Ladder Fire Companies. He was a life member of the Lebanon County Fireman’s Association and the Lebanon County Fire Chiefs Association. He was also a PA State Fire Instructor. He was an avid hunter and salt water fisherman who also enjoyed camping and making wine. He could also be found traveling to many different senior drum and bugle corps competitions. In addition to his wife, George is survived by sons: Toby A. and wife Kim Gettler; Eric M. Gettler; grandsons: William Sheetz and Austin Gettler; sisters: Kathy wife of Ken Ebersole; Karen wife of Rick Jordan and Sue wife of Jeff Sides; also several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:00 P.M. in Messiah Lutheran Church, 1800 Oak St., Lebanon, PA 17042.. There will be a viewing on Tuesday from 6 to 8 P.M. in the Rohland Funeral Home, 508 Cumberland St., Lebanon, PA 17042 and on Wednesday from 12:00 P.M. to the time of service at the church. Interment will be made in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Lebanon Federal Credit Union, George Gettler Fund, 300 Schneider Drive, Lebanon, PA 17046.
