=====================
In her younger years Shirley loved baseball, and would pack her kids up and off it was to her ladies fastball games; pitching strong and fast from the mound. And when she wasn't playing, she was coaching the game.
Some of Shirley's happiest and most unforgettable times were spent playing poker throughout the evening into the wee hours of the morning with those she loved, and taking trips to Mexico, Hawaii and Palm Springs. Many memorable moments and all encompassing crazy times were had by all.
For those that didn't know, Shirley was an avid golfer, with an incredible passion for the game. Considering she didn't take up the game until her late 30's, she had a God given natural talent and patience that brought her several accomplishments over the years. Her home club can attest to that (the Leduc Golf & Country Club), winning the Ladies Open 17 times (1979 thru 2001). She always said it would have been 20 times but she was busy chaperoning the Junior Alberta Girls Team at the Uplands Victoria (1980) and Shaunessy Vancouver (1982), and playing in the Alberta Ladies Senior Championship (1993). She was a winner of the Leduc Mixed Open in 1983, four times Wetaskiwin Ladies Open Champion and several other tournaments.
Some of her proudest moments were qualifying five times to be a member of the Alberta Ladies Senior Interprovincial Team to go to the Canadian Nationals; 1990 the Lorette Golf Club (Quebec), 1991 the Regina Golf Club, 1993 Uplands Golf Club (Victoria), 1994 Belvedere Golf Club (Charlottetown, PEI) and 1995 at the Oakdale Golf Club (North York, ON). The crowning moment was the day she won the coveted title of Alberta Ladies Senior Champion (1993).
During the 1980's thru 2000, Shirley found another passion when she decided to pick up a brush and began to paint. One of her daughters loved teasing her by saying, "Put a ruler in your hand, and you can't draw a straight line, but give you a brush and miracles happen."
She was a member of the Leduc Art Club for a few years. Shirley also enjoyed teaching art twice a week for seniors at the Telford House. They loved her as a teacher and looked forward to going to class, and she loved watching each of them grow as an artist. To honour her home club, Shirley donated a painting years ago of the 18th green at the Leduc Golf & Country Club, and it can still be found hanging above the fireplace.
