Coy was born to Thurman Joshua Hollis and Ruby Pearson Hollis in Birmingham,
where he met the love of his life, Jerrye Glee Ewing, at the age of 6. Their love story was one for the ages.
Coy lived a full life. He was an intellectual and a man’s man with a servant’s heart. He earned his master’s degree in psychology from the University of Arkansas and his doctorate in education from the University of Memphis. His adult years were spent in the pursuit of knowledge and in educational administration.
Upon his return to Birmingham, he reopened his father’s hardwood flooring business, working with his son and grandson to teach them the family trade.
Coy was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors with family and friends and was a regular contributor to Alabama Outdoor Life and Field & Stream.
Coy took great pride in and had an abiding love for his family. A man of few words, those around him listened when he spoke. He was a man of great wisdom and compassion who never met a stranger and had a way of making everyone he encountered feel like a person of dignity and worth.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Jerrye Glee; their children, Coy Randall Hollis and spouse Donna, and daughter, Valerie Dawn Carter and spouse Richard; his devoted sister Shirley Cardwell; his grandchildren Holli Diane, Tristan Adam, and Stephan Howard Hollis, and Meredith and Macy Licht, and their spouses; his great-grandchildren Kyle and Sophia Tinsley, Matthew Gage Harbor, Jackson Noah Mitchell, Samuel Lee, Donovan Tre, Devan Coy and Jeremiah Kenneth Hollis, and Jack Carter Heintz; and his beloved nephews, Matt, Gene, and Josh Cardwell and their families.
The family will receive friends Saturday, June 16, 2018 from 12PM to 1Pm at Kilgroe Funeral Home Leeds Chapel with a funeral service following at 1PM. Burial will take place at Forest Crest Cemetery.
