Douglas Martin Dungan, age 79, of Moody, Alabama passed away on his birthday, January 19th, in Birmingham, Alabama at St. Vincent's Hospital after complications from heart surgery. Doug was born in Saint Clair County, Alabama in 1943; the eldest son of Mattie Bernice and Kervin Martin Dungan. He grew up with three sisters; Mary Bernice, Emily and Miriam and one brother, Donald (Rhonda). As a youth growing up on their family farm, he loved sports and outdoor pursuits, including being an avid horse rider and cowboy. After graduating from St. Clair County High School he discovered a fascination for and love of working with large earth moving machines in construction and later driving and hauling tanker fuels for 15 years with Shell Oil Company and another 20 years with his own fleet of trucks with his eponymously named trucking company. He was a dedicated father to his two surviving sons, Jeffrey Martin (Lindsey) and Christopher Allen (Olivia), and loving husband to his wife of 57 years, Katrina Louise Dungan. He loved spending time with his grandchildren Hannah Louise McCord, Emma Grace, Tate, Zeb, Jonah, Phoebe, Elle, and great grandson, Jameson Martin McCord. He was a kind, tender friend to people of a myriad of demographics and a dependable provider and incessantly hard worker. He enjoyed gardening with Louise on their property filled with lush and wide ranging species of flowers, vegetables, some chickens, and every kind of fruit tree or bush that could grow in zone seven - and a few that aren’t really supposed to. Doug belonged to many churches over his life serving in various capacities as deacon, elder and Bible teacher - a book which he knew thoroughly and loved to read. He was a lifelong follower of Jesus, a part time missionary, and first hand builder of churches across the country with groups such as Carpenters for Christ and also with private groups in places as far away as Guatemala. Never at a loss for words, he had a wonderful and sometimes goofy sense of humor. He loved to tell stories and talk about life and living; he could find something to talk about with anyone at anytime. The celebration of Doug’s life on earth and his graduation to his new life where there is great fullness of joy will be held at Kilgroe Funeral Home in Leeds, Alabama on Tuesday, Jan 25th at 11am. Visitation will be at the same location beginning at 10am with family and friends. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, can be sent to two of Doug and Louise's favorite organizations: Doctors Without Borders, based in NYC and St Jude’s Children's Hospital based in Memphis.
