Helen Grant McClain Garrett, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on March 13, 2015. She was preceded in death by her Mother, Lois Grant McClain, and her father, Rufus Clayton McClain. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Mansell Raymond Garrett, Jr., her daughter Martha Garrett Griffin (John), her son, Mansell McClain Garrett, grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Griffin, Annie McClain Garrett and Mansell Robert Garrett, and many cousins and friends.
Helen was born on September 3, 1928, in Empire, AL. She graduated from Ensley High School in 1947. Helen received her BA in Education from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in 1952, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. After college, she had a long career as an educator, with service at Oak Grove High School, St. Clair County High School, and many years at Leeds High School. In that time, her influence directed many of her students to success in medicine, business and professional athletics.
Visitation will be held on Monday, 03/16/15 at Kilgroe Memorial Funeral Home, 1750 Ashville Road, Leeds, AL, with visitation from 10:00 – 11:45 AM, immediately followed by the funeral service at Noon. Her family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Leeds, 1189 6th Ave N, Leeds, AL 35094 or to the Michael J.
