Jim was born March 14, 1932 in Tifton, Georgia, the second child of Elizabeth Davis and Lee Roy Moore. The family moved to Leeds a few years later.
Jim graduated from Leeds High School in 1950. At age 19, he purchased a Gulf service station and went into business for himself. He remained self-employed throughout his professional life.
He served in the United States Army for two years (1956-1957), working first at the Pentagon before being stationed in Tokyo and Zama, Japan, where he specialized in military cryptography as part of Detachment M.
Jim was best known for operating Jimmy Moore’s Grocery, a fixture in Leeds for more than 40 years. During much of that time, he was also a member of the board of directors of Associated Grocers of Alabama.
In addition to his lifelong interest in the grocery industry, Jim also enjoyed flying his Cessna, spending time on his farm on the Coosa River in Ragland, admiring classic cars and tractors, and engaging in good conversation with his coffee buddies at Lisa’s Place.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Betty Jo Hagwood, and his two sisters, Anne Giles of Jacksonville, Florida and Sue Moore of West Palm Beach, Florida.
He is survived by his son, Ben Moore of Leeds; nephew, Bill Giles of Jacksonville, Florida; wife, Helen Faye Isbell Moore of Leeds; and best friend, Gordon Wright of Moody.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Kilgroe Funeral Home in Leeds. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM on the day of the funeral. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
