

Born Jan. 8, 1929, in Cross City, Florida, the daughter of JW McLeod and Mable Boatman McLeod. She began her love of music at age 6 on the violin which lead to a Master degree in Music Education from Samford University. She taught and mentored musical students for 20 years as a music teacher for the Birmingham Public school system and continued teaching students after retiring. Over the years, she developed a love for Bluegrass music which led to her playing with several groups for many years and until recently, in the bluegrass service at Springville United Methodist Church. During her lifetime she mastered the fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar, dulcimer, piano and all concert string instruments.
Known for her tatting and knitting, she loved to explore various other arts and crafts, oil painting both oil and water, making kaleidoscopes, leather working, beading and jewelry with many weeks spent at the John C. Campbell Folk School, in Brasstown, North Carolina, to learn new skills. She was always sharing her latest creations with her family and friends to their enjoyment.
She is survived by her beloved 5 sons, Melvin D. Wood, David L. Wood, Theodore E Wood, Donald K. Wood and Randolph L. Wood and their spouses. She has 16 grandchildren, and 10.5 Great Grandchildren. Visit online at www.kilgroefuneralhome.com
