

Mary Evelyn Mitchell’s long life of devotion and adoration to her family and friends peacefully ended at her home in Leeds on August 29, 2021. Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 1 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Kilgroe Funeral Home at 1750 Ashville Road in Leeds. A private Celebration of Life service will be held September 2 at 11:00 a.m. at The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany at 1334 Montevallo Road SW in Leeds. Born on July 24, 1933, Mary Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Don Mitchell; son, Bart Mitchell; daughter, Donna Schmohl; granddaughter, Haley Raymond; parents, TD Falkner and Lena Falkner; and brother, Jim Falkner. Mary Evelyn is survived by her son Ross Mitchell (Carol), daughter, Alicia Teed (Brad), daughter-in-law, Lisa Mitchell, grandchildren Cory Mitchell, Bill Mitchell, Sarah Mitchell, Jonathan Schmohl (Ashley), Mitchell Hester, Leah South (Tyler), Joe Mitchell, Mary Teed, and great grandchildren Austin and Allie Raymond. Mary Evelyn, a founding member of the Cahaba Valley Garden Club, was active with the Club for almost 60 years. She also deeply enjoyed and loved her church family and her many good friends in the Leeds Historical Society. Following her retirement from United Chair, Mary Evelyn traveled extensively, making a train trip across Canada, several cruises, and visiting every state except North Dakota and Iowa. She loved her cat, Muffin, and never turned away a stray in search of a meal. Even in her final months of life she remained vigilant about buying groceries for the Blessings Box at The Church of the Epiphany and rice and beans as part of the Church’s ministry to serve those in need.
