D.Paul, born May 23, 1963, was a man who found joy in the simple things—early mornings in the woods, casting a line on still water, and sharing stories of his adventures with those he loved. Whether he was out in nature or gathered with family, he felt most at home when surrounded by the people and places that meant the most to him.
Known for his selfless spirit, D.Paul was the kind of person who would give the shirt off his back to help someone. His generosity knew no limits, and his willingness to lend a hand made a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
D.Paul took great pride in his work. He was a superintendent for Rives Construction for over 30 years where he believed in doing things the right way, and his strong work ethic earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
Above all else, D.Paul cherished his family and God. He was a loving husband, father, Pappy, and friend, whose presence brought comfort, laughter, and unwavering support. His love for his family was evident in everything he did, and his memory will live on in the lives he touched. D.Paul is survived by his wife, Amy Cochrane; children, Amanda Hughes (Brian), Jared Varden (Lacey), Kathryn Varden and her fiancée (Virgile Cance), and Jessica Davis (Joshua); grandchildren, Brody Paul Hughes and Francie Bea Carlisle; sisters, Melinda Varden Dawson and Vickie Varden Gilley. D.Paul is preceded in death by his mother Mildred Louise Fortner Varden, his father Paul Stanley Varden, his sister Lou Ann Varden Scott and his brother Bruce Varden. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit will forever remain in the stories shared, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely.
A Visitation will be held on Tuesday April 7, 2026 from 11:30-1:00PM at the Chapel of Kilgroe Funeral Home in Leeds, Alabama with a Funeral Service to begin at 1:00PM. Burial will be at Forest Crest Cemetery.
A life so beautifully lived will never be forgotten.
