Rex will be remembered for his quiet and humble manner, dry wit, and his dedication to Jesus Christ and his family. He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Leeds and taught Sunday School from early adulthood until age 95. Known for his beautiful tenor singing voice, he sang in the church choir for decades and, in fact, met the love of his life, Loretta Farmer Veasey, at choir practice – when he convinced her to go for a drive in his 1951 Ford convertible.
Rex graduated from Leeds High School in 1943 and enlisted in the US Navy. After honorable discharge from the Navy, he worked briefly for Red Diamond Mining Company at Leeds, later joining American Cast Iron Pipe Company (ACIPCO) in Birmingham, where he worked for 42 years as a craft mechanic and shift foreman in the maintenance department. He was active in the ACIPCO Chorus for many years.
During retirement, Rex was a hardworking member of Carpenters for Christ, a volunteer organization that built and repaired churches across multiple states, as well as constructing wheelchair ramps and making household repairs for the needy. Rex was also a founding member of a local group of retirees, called “The Over-The-Hill Gang,” that conducted similar volunteer activities locally, including rebuilding the City of Leeds Historical Society’s Rowan Oaks Historical Home.
Rex is survived by his wife of 69 years; a son, Dwight Alan Veasey, of Quinton, AL; and two daughters, Margie Veasey Little, of Leeds, and Jo Alice Driggers (Ronnie), of Trussville, AL; a granddaughter, Carolyn Little Stern, Ph.D. (Greg) of Ellensburg, WA; four grandsons, John Charles Little of Nashville, TN, William Tyler Driggers (Haylie) of Birmingham, Ronald Blake Driggers of Huntsville, AL, and Christopher Driggers (Kristin) of Alabaster, AL; and four great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by a nephew, John Wesley Veasey (Nancy) of Middleburg, FL; a niece, Linda Veasey Patterson (Bob), of Marianna, FL; and two great-nieces. Rex was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Edwin Veasey; sister-in-law, Edna Veasey Yarborough; and son-in-law, Charles “Chuck” Bruce Little.
Due to Covid-19 safety concerns, a private service will be held for immediate family only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rex’s memory to the Coins of Compassion ministry at the First Baptist Church of Leeds.
