

Sara Blackerby Gay, age 80, of Sterrett, AL, passed from her earthly life on March 24, 2019, and was immediately welcomed in Heaven by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born on April 5, 1938, to parents Maude and Simon Blackerby in Four Mile, AL. She attended Vincent High School and Howard College. She worked for many years as an Administrative Assistant at UAB. She married John “Pete” Gay on October 19, 1957.
Sara’s life was filled with years of service to her family, her churches, and her community. As her children grew up, she served as Room Mother, Grey Lady, Sunday School teacher, and in the ballpark concession stand. She served, along with husband Pete, in the music ministry at several churches in the Birmingham area - Pete led the choir and Sara played piano. She was active in the Woman’s Missionary Union and Vacation Bible School at every church she served. After moving back to Sterrett in 1999, she was active in the Book Club, the Birthday Club, and the WMU at Beulah Baptist Church. In her pastime, she enjoyed reading books and watching Gaither videos with Pete, but mostly she enjoyed spending time with her family.
Sara was preceded in death by a son, Steven Keith Gay, at 10 days old. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, John R. “Pete” Gay; daughter Missy Fitts (Don); sons Rick Gay (Penny), Ronnie Gay (Bonnie), and Mike Gay (Christy); brother Tony Blackerby; grandchildren Jeremy Logan, Brett Logan, Brad Fitts, Lorie Givens, Courtney Gay, Morgan Gay, Lauren Gay, Lyndsey Gay, Kayla Dykes, Jake Gay, Whitney Gay, and Katie Banks Barrett; and 15 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 28, 2019, from 12 PM to 2 PM at Kilgroe Funeral Home Leeds Chapel, with a funeral service to follow at 2 PM. Burial will take place at Forest Crest Cemetary
