Born on December 1, 1930, to Lelas Albert Schmitt and Ora Lee Schmitt, Neil grew up with a deep love for his hometown. After graduating from Leeds High School, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, rising to the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Alabama in under two and a half years before entering the University of Alabama School of Law. There, he served as president of the senior class, defeating future U.S. Senator Richard Shelby for the role.
Neil returned to Leeds to establish his law practice, which would span over five decades. A committed public servant, he held many roles throughout the years—including City Councilman, Mayor Pro-Tem, City Attorney, and Judge. His leadership and mentorship impacted multiple generations, as he guided many young professionals who went on to become respected attorneys, judges, and civic leaders.
He was a proud member of the Leeds Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Neil was also a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Leeds, where his faith and community spirit were lived out daily.
