Marjorie Poe (Margoree) Adams went to sleep in the precious arms of Jesus on December 21, 2016 in Alexandria, Louisiana. She was blessed to live 92 full years and kept her indomitable spirit and warm sunny outlook throughout her life. Marjorie was born in Six-Mile-Fullerton, Louisiana on January 30, 1924, the first child of John Madison and Nettie Monk Poe. With four brothers coming along (Richard Abraham, Ralph David, John (Tut) Jr. and Edgar Allan) she learned working in the cotton patch, studying by lamp light, moving very often as her father found work, and all the struggles of being a “Depression Era” family was just part of who she was. Stories of hard times and courageous lives would add to many conversations through the years. She was especially proud to remember her father, John Poe, teaching adults to write their names for the very first time.
Marjorie, as a 16 year old Leesville High School graduate, held several jobs in town and at Ft. Polk before becoming a telephone operator, a job she always loved. She met and married her husband, Roy William Adams, in June 1959, and had her only child, Karen, in May of 1960. She continued to work at the telephone company until she was 48 years old, when she was forced to retire due to a terrible “weird disease” for which the doctors could never find the cause or the cure. Thankfully, Jesus stepped in many times to ease the pain as only He can.
When my wonderful mama was 30 years old, she traded the youthful enjoyment of jitterbugging for dancing with the Lord and she loved him with her soul, strength, and life. When she was born, her mother was attended by Dr. J.W. Jean, a doctor filled with the Holy Ghost. The prayers he must have prayed over the new mother and her newborn little girl so long ago surely has played an awesome part in our family. It is a wonderful story to see God reach through the years to our family with His love and salvation.
Marjorie Poe Adams is survived by her daughter, Karen Adams of Leesville, 2 step-daughters, Sharon Stanley and Gail Fitzgerald (Henry) of Hockley, Texas and step-grandchildren and great grandchildren, a brother, Edgar Allan Poe and sister-in-law Donna of Alexandria, Louisiana, sisters-in-law Marian Poe of Texas and Faith Poe of Singer, Louisiana, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a very special nieta, Gayla Smith of Baton Rouge.
Marjorie was so full of life and firm in her values, ready to share happiness with one or one hundred. She loved to tap her toes and dance in the kitchen. She was intelligent, quick to learn, innately funny, and creatively spoken. She loved to laugh. She simply “sparkled”, and for 92 years she was a gift to those who were blessed to know her. My mother had the ability to hear life’s music and walk to the beat of her own drum.
Visitation will be held at Hixson Funeral Home in Leesville on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 from 5 until 9 P.M. and resume Wednesday, December 28, at 1 P.M. at Walnut Hill United Pentecostal Church until the time of service at 2 P.M. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home.
