Remembering Papa Obie today, had some blueberries with my preschool kids today...reminded me of the afternoon on the bench swing with Papa and Rhett Michael as a toddler...missing you Mama and Papa, your grand-daughter.

I had the pleasure of giving care to Mr Goins recently in the hospital. No matter when I went into his room, day or night, he always smiled. I asked him if I could call him "Paw Paw" because thats what he looked like to me. I had lost both my own many years ago and "Paw Paw" came into my mind the first time I saw him. Even though he couldnt speak, he laughed out loud when I asked him this and nodded "yes". 
From that day on, whenever I had Mr Goins as a patient, I called him "Paw Paw". He always smiled and laughed. Caring for him was truly a pleasure and Im so glad God allowed me to meet such a sweet man. I know he is laughing in Heaven.

Oliver Goins was the most gentle soul I ever met. He was the most fantastic father, husband, cow herder, blueberry eating, coffee drinking, singing, cow boy hat wearing, storytelling, loving man. Mr. Oliver was my Pa-Pa. He was and always will be a strong part of who I became as an adult. I cry because I wish I was there with my mother to hold her, my Aunts to hug when they cry, and for my cousins and siblings to morn with. But I can't so my kids and I sit in a small, country church, surrounded by cornfields in northern Indiana and light candles for this great, great man. I know Pa-Pa would love the view from the top of the hill at our church overlooking the fields! Rhett and Delia haven't seen their Pa-Pa Obie since they were little but they morn because of his legacy that stayed with them. I promise to keep his spirit alive with the stories he shared with me all my life...the day he let us ride in the back of his truck to Marlo's store to get a coke...his wild horses in the woods...his Brahma bull...the armadillo incident...how his coffee in the carport was better than
 Ma-Ma's...the moon shining...oh how long I could go! But I will share these stories and more with my children and let them know the Oliver and Evelyn Goins I knew. Sometimes I will cry or maybe even weep but mostly I will smile and pray because I know they are sitting in heaven right now on a wooden swing Ma-Ma with no glasses and red hair, and Pa-Pa with his cow boy hat on just resting...yep, yep, yep. At least in my heaven that's what's going on:)
