

Rodger Lee Porter, 70, of Slagle, met the Lord on August 25, 2010 at home, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on January 10, 1940 in Philadelphia, PA. His mother and father were Gladys Margarette Allard Porter and Sherman Ray Dyer. He had lived in the Slagle area for the past 8 years.
He served in the United States Air Force and was a Vietnam Veteran. He was also a lifetime member of the NRA, an avid hunter and bowler and MOPAR enthusiast. He graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1958 and had a lifetime love of baseball. He was a member of the Slagle Antioch Baptist Church. Rodger was a simple man who shared his kindness and caring with everyone, especially his best buddy, Pete Miller of Hicks and bowling buddy, Jeff Easterling of Leesville. The light of his life was his sweetie pie, Kathy.
Rodger is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence and Diane Porter of Whitesboro, NY.; daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Scott Walker of Floyd, NY and stepdaughter, Carrie Bellinger; brother, and sister-in-law, John H. Porter and Cathy of North Syracuse, NY.; sisters, Patricia Silliman of Sandy Creek, NY, Nikki Wilcox and companion Paul Fiegl of Pulaski, NY, June Houghton of Pensacola, FL., Sharon Mottern of Brandenton, FL and Mary Moore of TN; grandchildren, Jessica, Ashley, Lauren, Emily and David; great-granddaughter, Cheyann and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Margarette Allard Porter; father, Sherman Ray Dyer and a brother, George Dyer.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2010, 4:00 PM at the Antioch Baptist Church with the Revs. Harlis Meglian and Benny Backlund officiating. Burial will be at Antioch Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home of Leesville, La. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday beginning at 1PM until the time of the service. A celebration supper will follow in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his favorite eating place, The Slagle Senior Center.
