

During World War II, Dean served his county in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the 237th Air Force Base Unit, 32nd Bomb Squadron and was an airplane maintenance mechanic. He enlisted on May 16, 1941 and was discharged on September 15, 1945 as a Technical Sergeant. He served in Tunisia, Sicily, Naples and other places in Europe. Among his decorations were the American Defense Service Ribbon with one Silver Service Star, one Bronze Service Star and one Bronze Oak Leaf. After the War he worked at several jobs including planting trees for the CCC.
After moving to California in 1957 he worked as a service station mechanic working at Smitty’s Service Station in the 34th Block of Adams Avenue in Normal Heights. After several years there, he then went to work for the U.S. Postal Service, working at the San Diego Midway Post Office as a mail handler for 20 years. He was a member of the Encanto VFW Post 6874 in San Diego, California.
He married Elaine Carol Boyer and they had 1 daughter Marcia. Through the years his family called Elaine “Nanaw” and Dean was known as “Papaw”. Elaine passed away on March 23, 2005.
His daughter Marcia and son-in-law Frank Lewis moved into Dean’s home, after Elaine’s passing, and lovingly took care of Dean in his final years. He is survived by Marcia and Frank Lewis of San Diego, 2 granddaughters and their husbands Marci and Drew Lovell of Cooksville, Tennessee and Crystal and Greg Aiken of Lakeside, California. He is also survived by his great grandchildren Travis Enslow, Angelica Aiken and Mackenzie Aiken.
Visitation will be on Monday, May 7, 2012 from 4 – 7 p.m. at Conrad Lemon Grove Mortuary. Funeral Service will be on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. also at Conrad Lemon Grove Mortuary. After the service Dean will be laid to rest beside Elaine at Greenwood Memorial Park in San Diego, California following Military Honors by the US Army.
