July 30, 1926 – February 27, 2016
Eleanora “Joy” Drinkwine of San Diego passed away February 27, 2016.
She was born in Philo, California Eleanora Joy Lyons to Elsie Knivila and Alf
W. Lyons. Joy grew up in Santa Rosa, California, where she was raised by her
Grandmother Ada (who she loved so much). She attended Anderson valley high
school in Boonville, California and was in the Band (she played the Clarinet).
At 14 her Uncle Oscar got her a job cooking in the lumber camps. Later in life, she moved to San Diego, where
she lived for 58 years. Joy worked at Caesars Restaurant in Hillcrest for a few years. She then worked her way
up from Cook to Supervisor at Home Federal Savings and Loan in downtown San Diego; there she and the staff
cooked and served 800 employees a day. It was a hard physical job but, she was very proud to have it for 14
years.
Joy loved her Family very much and always loved seeing them. “Christmas and Thanksgiving were always
Great because Mom was a fantastic cook but, also made amazing Homemade Potato Salad and Key-Lime Pie,
Lemon Meringue Pie and her Famous Fudge for Christmas”, said her youngest son Charlie.
Joy really enjoyed the San Diego Padres and loved going to the ballgames with her best friend (of 53 years)
Jeanette Anderson and Dixie. She also loved her cat - PrettyGirl very much.
Mom, did not want any services, she will have her Ashes scattered at sea. “Mom said, she didn’t want people
crying about her death and to just to remember the good times they had with her in life, and to take care of their
families.
A Note about Mom:
Even though her last name was Drinkwine and every time someone heard it they’d laugh a little and say; that’s
a very unusual last name – she would always say “And I don’t drink it, either”.
However, even though she never drank any Wine, Every Year on her Birthday, she loved going to Tio Leo’s
Mexican restaurant and having One Margarita Rocks with salt (Just One).
In her Will she had hand written “No services, go out and have a Margarita”.
She is survived by Seven Children, Twenty Grandchildren, Twenty-One Great-Grandchildren
and Two Great-Great Grandchildren.
Joy will be truly missed, but never forgotten by her Friends and Family. ***
