John Peters

John Peters, 91, of Lemon Grove, California, passed away peacefully at home

after a long illness on Tuesday, July 18th, in the presence of his loving family.

John was born in Franklin, New Hampshire, a beloved son of Nicholas Peter

Philip and Frosina Naum. He graduated from Charlton High School (Charlton, MA) in June,

1944. He served honorably in the Unites States Army from September 1944 – December 1946

during World War II in the European Theater. He attended Suffolk University (Boston,

Massachusetts) and received a BA in History and English minor. He participated in semi-pro

football and enjoyed acting, being cast in major rolls as a judge, lawyer, westerner, and many bit

parts. On April 14, 1951, he married Olympia Apostola in Chepatchet, Rhode Island. In 1953,

John and Olympia moved to San Diego, California, to establish a home and begin their family.

John participated in Junior Achievement as an advisor, assisting junior and senior high school

students in learning all aspects of forming a business. He pursued courses at California Western

University and was accredited as an elementary school teacher. He worked for Chevron for 33

years.

John was an avid square and round dancer traveling around the country to attend square dance

festivals and was a member of the Vagabond Square Dance Club of San Diego for many years.

He attended St. Spyridon GOC and Saint Gregory of Nyssa where he participated until his

passing. He was particularly proud of becoming a Parliamentarian and was a member of the

Sigma Delta Unit of the National Association of Parliamentarians.

John will be remembered for his deep love of family, adventurous spirit, cheerful disposition,

joyous and humorous outlook on life, inquisitive mind, spiritual and compassionate nature,

willingness to help others, and tremendous generosity throughout his long and blessed life.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Olympia Apostola, loving children, Andrea

Bazer (James Leamons) of Lemon Grove, Jane Ledford (Lawrence) of El Cajon, and Christopher

Peters (Lenore) of Lemon Grove, grandchildren, Stefanie (Thomas), Marie, Karen, Tom, Nick,

great-grandchildren, Lillian, Theodore, Atom, Alyssa, Matty, his dear brother Alexander Peters,

and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. John was preceded by his parents, daughter Karen

Peters, grandson John Ledford, siblings Tefta Norton, Liris Peters and Daniel Peters.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Trisagion will take place on Tuesday, August 1st at 7:30 p.m. at St.

Gregory of Nyssa Greek Orthodox Church 1454 Jamacha Road, El Cajon, California. Funeral

will take place on Wednesday, August 2nd, from 10:00 a.m. at St. Gregory of Nyssa Greek

Orthodox Church 1454 Jamacha Road, El Cajon, California. Burial to follow at Fort Rosecrans

National Cemetery, 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr, San Diego, CA 92106.
