Richard D. Garske

May 29, 1940March 26, 2013

Richard Donald Garske was born in West Allis, Wisconsin to Frank and Dorothy (Slowinski) Garske. He went home to our Lord on March 26, 2013.

He graduated from Mangue High School in Reno, Nevada and served four years in the United States Navy having served time in Adak, Alaska, Carrier Hornet, and two years on Guam as a weatherman. One honorable discharged from the Navy, Richard earned a degree in Economics from University of Nevada at Reno. He then packed up his Austin Healey and drove to San Diego to earn his law degree from USD, vowing never to return to the cold.

Richard joined the Attorney General’s Office in San Diego in 1972 after graduating from USD and passing the bar exam on his first attempt. He was a Deputy Attorney General of California for 34 years before he finally decided to retire in 2005. His former colleagues attest that Richard was a lawyer of tremendous character and ability, and was a respected, trusted, and valued member of the Department of Justice during his many years of dedicated service. He was a mentor to many, and his advice and counsel were frequently sought by friends, colleagues, and family alike.

Richard financed his college days by dealing Craps in Reno, Nevada learning from example from his mother, who dealt Blackjack for over 40 years.

His love of baseball was instant, and lasted from the time he watched his father play as a boy to laughing at Ted Leitner’s stories while recounting ever Padre swing during their 2012 season.

He became a member of professional Toastmasters and was the frequent orator requested for his eloquent style. He truly was a man of integrity and held in high esteem by all who knew him for his honesty, optimism, and religious faith, which was deeply entwined in every phase of his personal and professional life. The idea of “God, family, and country” described him completely. His life-long Catholic Faith drew him to daily Mass and Rosary, where he befriended many of the nuns at his Parish always taking the extra step and often even driving them to doctor visits.

He was the consument family man. Richard and Sandra were a couple for 42 years, and his children were his whole life. He treasured his family and placed deep emphasis on the value of his friends, who were the loves of his life.

Richard is survived by his wife Sandra, son Grant, daughter Alexis, sister and brother-in-law Ilo and Larry Hauder, brother and sister-in-law James and Patti Garske, uncle Conrad Slowinski and aunt Mildred Garske.

He was beloved by all for his values and what he represented as a man. He will be deeply missed by anyone who ever had the pleasure to meet him.

A Rosary/Vigil Service will be on Monday, April 8, 2013 - 6 p.m. Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 - 11 a.m. Both services being held at St. Therese Catholic Church (6016 Camino Rico - San Diego, CA 92120). Private Famly Services to be held at a later date at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California.

Blessed are those who have died in the Lord; let them rest from their labors for their good deeds go with them.

Eternal rest grant unto Richard, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. May his soul and the souls of all the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, Rest in Peace. Amen.

I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. II Timothy 4:7-8

In looking at the photo gallery I was again reminded of Richard's constant, natural smile and positive attitude. He was an outstanding attorney who always practiced to the highest standards. The photos also confirm that he was much loved by family and friends and that he enjoyed life to the fullest. It was a privilege to know and work with him.

To the Garskes,
You have our deepest sympathies. I met Richard when I first joined the Attorney General's Office in 1981. My office was next to Esther Leuzzi's desk so he was one of the first people I met in the AG's Office. It was an honor to work with Richard. He was a a true gentleman, a kind man with a generous spirit and unique sense of humor. We are all diminished by his loss. You have our deepest sympathies.
