People influence your life in subtle ways over time that you don’t notice unless you take the time to remember those influences. I worked with Sandy Shoopman for 24 years at Spectrum Printing from 1980 to 2004. She was my boss when I was a cutter operator and then a shipping supervisor. We worked together when I was an estimator and then 18 years as a sales rep.
In Shipping she taught me to make a list of everything I needed to get done for that day which I still do today. One month a local bank changed their name and reprinted every form they had – all this was due at the end of the month and on the last day I was so overwhelmed that around 1:00 that afternoon I just sat down and stared in a daze. The next day Sandy sat me down in her office and told instead of worrying about what I couldn’t get done find what could be done and let her know and she would help me prioritize. I still use that general concept today.
In Sales she taught me to be honest when scheduling with her – no need to pad my due dates – no games. That is how I schedule today as production manager.
She never let anyone badger her into cutting corners. My jobs were almost always on time and the spoilage rate was too low to calculate. I would have preferred to work with her until one of us retired.
Sandy’s influence is passed on to my co-workers, employees, bosses and even my family. I was fortunate to have worked with her.
