Victor R. Astuto

October 17, 1931 – June 8, 2016

Victor Astuto, 84 passed away peacefully in his Spring Valley home on June 8, 2016. He was born in Loma Linda, California to parents Giuseppe and Lillian Astuto. He was the youngest of 7 children.

He was married to Rita (Chavez) (deceased) for 52 years. Together they raised three children: Leonard (deceased), Peter, and Vicki (Gore). Victor also leaves behind 4 grand children and 5 great-grand children.

Victor was most proud of his military service. He enlisted in the United States Navy on September 11, 1950. After completing Boot Camp at Naval Training Center-San Diego, he was assigned to the Seabees (in Victor’s words, “the working part of the Navy”) and began his career at ACB-1 (Amphibious Construction Battalion-1) Coronado, California. Through the years, he served in Japan, Korea (during the war), Albuquerque NM, Las Vegas NV, Port Hueneme CA, Okinawa, Guam, Vietnam (3 tours), Philippines, Hawaii and completed the circle when his last assignment was ACB-1 Coronado CA. Victor retired as the Master Chief of the Command of ACB-1 on September 13, 1976.

Unable to stop working, Victor went to work for Safeway in San Diego for 10 years and then on to North Island Naval Air Station as a crane operator. He finally retired for good as the Foreman of the Crane and Rigging Department in 1997.

Victor settled in at home after all the traveling and worked on his many woodworking projects, tended to his father’s fig tree, and sat with his dog Jackie till the end.

Service Information:

Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at 10:00 am at Santa Sophia Catholic Church; 9800 San Juan Street, Spring Valley, CA 91977. Interment will be at Singing Hills Memorial Park; 2800 Dehesa Road, El Cajon, CA 92019. Reception to follow.
