Ginny was born in Vincennes, Indiana on June 18, 1947 thirteen minutes before her unexpected identical twin sister Viccy. She graduated from St. John Lutheran School and Lincoln High School and earned a degree in Secretarial Science from Vincennes University in 1968.
She was a member of the Lincoln High School cheer squad. At Vincennes University she was very active in the International Club which brought students from all over the world to her home where many of them enjoyed her mother Het’s chocolate cake.
When the family traveled to La Mesa from Vincennes a few weeks after college graduation, to participate in their brother Dave’s marriage to Parm, the amount of luggage the girls brought was remarkable for a week-end visit, but their announcement was even more astonishing—they were moving to La Mesa!
They immediately rented Dave’s vacated apartment and launched their careers in 1968 at HandyMan, where Ginny continued to work as an executive secretary until 1986.
Ginny soon became part of the Christ Lutheran family and began participating in young people’s activities and joined the Joy Singers choral group. She and Viccy had a passion for sharing Jesus and participated in the evangelism program. Her twin sister had been reading through the entire Bible at the time of her death in 1978 and Ginny picked up where she left off and has not missed a year since then.
After volunteering at the church for a few years before she started working part time in January of 1992 and full time in May of 1996. She used her secretarial skills, business skills and yes even her shorthand writing skills to serve the church.
Ginny loved to make scrap books for people as gifts. She loved their two cats. She loved to plan parties. One of Ginny’s greatest loves and gifts was prayer. She was a prayer warrior, praying daily for her family, friends, church family, neighbors, and those in need. She even prayed for prime parking spots.
On January 30, 1982, Ginny married Dave Ambler. Her diabetes was a major factor in their not having children of their own, but God brought hundreds of children into her life through her loving ministry to the Sunday school. Ginny was spiritually gifted with evangelism and a passion for making certain that the kids knew Jesus as their Savior. She and Dave served as Sunday School Superintendents for over 20 years.
Ginny and Dave were godparents to many children, a responsibility they took seriously, encouraging each one in his or her personal faith. Not a birthday or holiday went by without a card, note or gift to mark the occasion. Ginny also delighted her nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews. A favorite were the “treasure hunts” she planned that took them all over the house and yard to find little gifts. Ginny was a gift giver to the neighborhood children and to those around the world. She was well known in the US Army for sending chocolate chip cookies to nephew Jeff when stationed in Korea. Once shopping at Parkway Plaza Ginny struck up a conversation with an Army soldier only to find out he had been stationed in Korea, and knew about Aunt Ginny’s cookies. Ginny was so kind and accepting of people no matter their person or situation. She developed a heart for the homeless. Some even called her by name when she would take her walks at lunch. At Christmastime each year Ginny composed a poem that included activities she and Dave participated in during the year. She always shared in the poem how much God loves each one of us.
She was preceded in death by her twin sister Victoria Von Behren; father and mother Alvin and Hedwig "Het" Von Behren; nephew Douglas Von Behren; and father-in-law Warren "Pete" Ambler. Ginny is survived by her husband David Ambler; sister and brother-in-law Patricia "Pat" and Oliver Schutte; brother and sister-in-law David and Parma Von Behren; mother-in-law Wauneta Ambler; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Janice and Paul Massman; brother-in-law Gerry Ambler; 4 nephews, 3 nieces; 3 great nephews; 3 great nieces and many friends.
Ginny was much loved and will be deeply missed.
