Bessie Marie Roberts

Bessie was born on January 30, 1936, in Carroll County, Virginia, to the late William Chappell and Virginia Fleming Chappell Chandler. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bobby J. Roberts; one sister, Edith Collins; and three brothers, Jimmy, Dick, and Ray Chappell.

Bessie was a devoted wife and mother who took immense pride in caring for her family. She worked for many years at Granite Savings and Loan, retiring in 1991. A gifted gardener, Bessie was well-known for her beautifully kept yard — often admired as the prettiest in the neighborhood.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving daughter, Starla Cox of Lenoir; sisters, Kathy Philyaw of Lenoir, Virginia Coffey of Granite Falls, and Tammy Ogle of Cana, Virginia; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

A graveside service to honor Bessie’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Nick Coffey, Elmer Garcia, Robert Cox, Barry Chappell, Jeff Greene, Brian Cox, and Allen Chappell.
