Mr. Riggs was born in Caldwell County to the late John Henry Riggs and Charlotte Flowers Riggs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Ned, Z.O. and Bass Riggs.
A proud WWII veteran he was stationed in Germany and France. Bill was a retired service manager at local automobile dealerships for over 40 years. As a second career, he retired after 22 years as a bank courier. A lifelong charter member of North Catawba Fire and Rescue, he served actively in the role of fireman and on the Board of Directors for 56 years.
In 2013, Bill received the honor of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the most prestigious awards presented by the governor of North Carolina.
He was a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church in the Baton community.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lois Greene Riggs, of the home; his daughters, Sheila Riggs Taylor and husband, Roger, of Conover and Sherry Riggs Modlin and husband, Monte, and a grandson, Rhyne Modlin, all of Hickory; a brother John Riggs and wife, Peggy, of Lenoir; his sisters, Gwyn Frye, Sabra Melton, Peggy Jean Wilson and husband, Bob, all of Lenoir; and Mary Gay Hickman of Hickory.
A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at Mountain Grove Baptist Church with Dr. Clifton Black and Reverend Jeff Burkheimer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to North Catawba Fire and Rescue, 2064 Connelly Springs Road, Lenoir, NC 28645 or Caldwell County Hospice, 902 Kirkwood St., Lenoir, NC 28645.
